This is Sonya. She travelled across South Africa with a backpack and R100 for just under a year. During that time she stayed with over 150 families, who all took her in and helped her out of the goodness of their hearts. I think that’s amazing. She’s currently writing a book about her adventure. Click here to read more about her travels, and click here to follow her on twitter.
Went on a little trip up North to ‘get some perspective’. And by perspective, I mean, meet some cool people, drink Johnnie Walker Black and go to cool places. I’m never fond of leaving the city bowl, but my fellow Capetonians, JHB isn’t so bad, if you know how to do it. Stick with me kids.
Went to a Khaya FM Johnnie Black Jazz Party at Katzy’s. Love Katzy’s – it’s a jazz bar in the old school tradition at The Firs in Rosebank. Definitely a repeat venue for dinners and casual drinks for future Joburg trips.
Had lunch at Sofiatown restaurant in Newtown. Spotted this Nike Run Your City wheatpaste / social media campaign. Apparently one was done in Cape Town, but in Woodstock, so I never saw it. Not sure who runs through Woodstock. Would be far too cumbersome carrying pepperspray and a tazer.
Went to Neh! in Alexandra. It’s a 3-story restaurant / bar / club that looks out over the township. Loved the VIP areas - all Courvoisier and Hennessy and purple velvet and Veuve.
Spotted this poster at Kospotong in Newtown – love it. Love the ‘Hayibo Tokoloshe’ caption too!
Stayed at the Da Vinci hotel across the road from the Sandton Convention Centre. It’s got a great vibe – all black and white and silver. Great for a girls weekend, for future reference. Thanks for having me Joburg, it was fab.
Wow I am struggling to deal with this! MTN sent CTG this message which basically taunts me! “Imagine eating macaroons in London with 5 of your friends” – are you kidding? That is pretty much my life ambition! It’s to promote their MTN Man United competition, where you can win a trip for you and 5 friends to watch Manchester United play at Old Trafford. As they say, it’s not just soccer – it’s LONDON. Well, close to. Hello.
Okay I’ve entered. Am all worked up, imagining strolling down Portobello Street shovelling macaroons into my face, like the guys does in the video. Have you entered? Click here to find out more and enter. I’m just going to try and calm down here. “Macaroons for life!” Amen!
PS. Follow @mtnmanunited on twitter to keep tabs on the competition.
We don’t normally do this, but we’d like to give a special shout-out to Vince from North Carolina in the US of A, who is a General in the Corps Marines (in which he’s been serving for 12 years now). We hear Vince recently came to South Africa for a holiday, and that he loves it. A little birdie told us that he quite likes reading CTG, too.Well, we’re sending the love right back at you, Vince! Please give little Sophia Grace a big hug and a kiss for us, okay? She is just too beautiful. When she’s a bit older, we’ll take her out and show her how to be a CapeTownGirl ;) Thanks for reading CTG, we appreciate your support.
Big thanks to Simone for sending this in. We’re flattered you thought of CTG while in the big apple :). When we’re next in New York we’ll be hitting it up for some Soho shades, don’t you worry!
PD sent through some of what she is ‘dealing with’ right now over in the shopping mecca that is Dubai. Allow me to share. Above would be the Giorgio Armani hotel – everything about it is ‘pure Armani’. Yes, we like Dubai. It’s like a huge beach with shopping malls all over it. What’s NOT to love?
Above is a restaurant called Switch. It’s designed by hipster designbro Karim Rashid. Strange. Pretty.
Shoes… yes.
Loads of natural shopping mall beauty.
Shoes. Yes. Yes, again.
Skyline…
“Is this a Lanvin I see before me????”
Madonna. I’d expect nothing less. Sad it’s come to an end. We like it here. We want to stay. I’ll be posting more of PD ‘Postcards from Dubai’ over the next few days.
They’re called ‘Sky Posters’ and they bring the lols. Check out their facebook page for more. Make your own poster and you could win double return tickets to a destination of your choice. Kiffariffic.
So MissEmmaJude just returned from a sojourn in Paris and she brought me back these nom noms! They are delicious, despite being subject to some travel time. Having sampled authentic Parisian macarons, I can with all honestly say that the macarons Cassis makes are right up there with authentic Parisian macarons.
Going upcountry for 2 days for a top secret summin summin. It’s very very exciting – I WISH I could tell you now but soon, soon. You can follow the action on my twitter. Scheduling will resume as normal on Thursday. Kinda nervous. Haven’t left Wembley Square in months. I love Joburg because it has this vibe:
Taken from top of Carlton Hotel Joburg CBD
and this vibe – LOVE this building:
Some insurance firm?
but Joburg also throws this vibe, which kinda scares me:
