So Pepe Jeans have just released their Winter LookBook, and I’ve been going through it – there’s some really great stuff.

I love Pepe Jeans clothing because it’s understated quality. It’s not trying to be too cool or too anything - it’s just simple, well-made basics with attention to detail that you dress up and down and wear pretty much anywhere. And I’m quite excited to tell you that Pepe Jeans will be giving away some of their new winter range to a lucky CTG reader. To win, you just gotta go check out the Autumn / Winter lookbook here (find it under “Collections”), and take a screenshot of your favourite item and mail it to me at editor@capetowngirl.com with the subject line ‘My favourite Pepe Jeans winter item is”.
And it’s that simple. The comp is open to guys AND girls, and the winner will be announced next Friday 25 March.
PPS. A second way to enter is to go in store and take a pic of your favourite Pepe Jeans SA item, just in case you’re not sure it’ll work on your body / it’ll suit you, etc. So maybe go check it out – you can get really specific about what you want. Click here to see where Pepe is available in South Africa.
How stunning are these Chanel’s? Picked them up last night at Sunglass Hut. They have an awesome new selection in store right now. It was really tough to pick.

From left, Tom Ford, Tom Ford and Stella McCartney. Good luck making your pick!

Spotted the Mean Girls star wearing a pair of my favs - the Ray Ban batwings. Well that’s what I call them. To me it’s a really nice version of that classic wayfarer shape. Super Cool. I’ve got a brown and a black pair, both from Sunglass Hut at the waterfront.

Great news for my London readers! Vida is now opening another store in your town, and it’s in Goodge Street. This is in addition to the one in Golden Square. Best you put your mouse here and like Vida UK on facebook, that way you’ll know as soon as the new store is open, and apparently it’s any day now. You know that this makes the prospect of London holidays far more bearable. CTG can really only exist in two places right now – London and South Africa – because there are no Vidas anywhere else. It’s like the law of gravity. Or a law of gravity. Pictured below is Green Point store manager Elias on the right – he’ll be heading up the baristas in the new store. This is good news and sad news – we will miss you Elias!

I love that Vida take their baristas with them overseas. It just wouldn’t be Vida without them!

So the last month has been a wild rollercoaster of emotion with Global Trader as part of their What’s Stopping You campaign. They took a ‘chick who lounges around in lingerie eating cupcakes macaroons’ and gave her a whole bunch of macaroons and then said, we will make your more macaroons. And we made macaroons – boy did we make them. But we lost them too, and in the losing of the macaroons did I really learn what trading is about. To summarise:
- trading is great if you love the thrill of a moving puzzle. A lot of it involves watching the markets and then making educated guesses. and it’s fascinating how, when you suddenly think you’re on top of all of it, you get a bit of a curveball and suddenly your guessing system stops working, and you realise there is no guessing system, you just have to keep watching the markets. So it’s an exercise is being extremely present! Quite adrenalin-filled – if you enjoy poker, you’ll enjoy this.

- if you’re a phone-phobe like me, you’ll need to set up an email reporting system with your trader, or you’re going to miss out on some valuable advice and insight. Oli used to ring me in the morning and I’d miss his call, and then I’d see my money going up and down and I’d be guessing what he’s doing and have to ask him later what went on. This got easier to manage by simply using the GT247 app on my desktop, which I’d recommend you do.
- trading is actually a lot easier than everyone thinks it is. Global Trader also make the information readily available. They just launched ‘The Wire’ which is like twitter for traders - you can see what everyone else is doing, and chat about what you’re going to do – real time. I reckon I’d spend most of my time here, because I don’t like to feel alone in my trading. I like to see what other people are doing. I’m a social market analyst, I like to see things in front of me.
- if you’re going to trade, start small. The risk of diving right into it can really cause some stress, which is why the services Global Trader offers are really invaluable. Having a dedicated trader gives you the most comprehensive level of service, whereas chilling on The Wire or using the desktop app keep you constantly connected. The best way to start is by creating a simulated account HERE and MAKE MISTAKES. Seriously. Making mistakes = learning.

How CTG did:
We started with 10k. We then went up to 14k. We then hit a low of about 7k. And then we got up to 11k again. So an overall earning of 10% in the three months I worked with Global Trader. Not bad! We could have done things differently, like banked the money at 14k. But I think part of the fun is taking risks. I really enjoyed it. Why not give it a try? What’s stopping you?

Metropolitan Republic Creative Director Iain Thomas talks about how MTN launched the iPhone 4 in SA. CTG gets a mention ;)
Update: CTG has always been an iPhone fan. The iPhone 4 has sent happiness levels through the roof though. I cannot recommend highly enough that you get one. And if you are still going on about how expensive they are, think again. You can get an iPhone 4 on contract from our brand BFF MTN for R379 a month. That’s the same price as a Nokia. Yes – there’s really no excuse anymore!

One of our brand BFFS turns 10 today. We are so proud! Happy Birthday to Paul and Tracy at NoMu, who managed to take CTG from ‘frightened kitchen-phobe’ to ‘chilled, healthy, delicious dishes 3 times a week’. You guys have contributed to CTG’s personal growth (literally – more cooking means more eating ;) and for that we must give you a HUGE birthday hug. And some cupcakes. Maybe. If we don’t eat them before the courier gets here.
xx
PS have you checked out their blog? It’s quite funny.
I learnt about ’strategy’ in my first year bus sci that I dropped out of to do a bcom that I dropped out of too to do PR. Not having a strategy is like ‘planning to fail’ (which would actually make failure success, so that doesn’t rly make any sense does it? F U cyclical logic). Strategy is everything. And according to the mags you gotta have an anti-aging strategy. You gotta have a beauty maintenance strategy. So we figure you gotta have a tanning strategy. I learnt this from reading Warren Buffet. Not many people learn this from Buffet, but I like to think I can really find that unique special something in a leader that other people miss. Like, I see that Jacob Zuma is a popstar, as well as a president. Anyway… tanning.
My tanning strat (I have fair skin that goes brown):
SPF30 on body every day standard.
In Sun SPF 50 on face every day standard.
Morning to mid-day outdoor beach sessions and runs: oil-free SPF 50. Applied 3 times over 45 minutes BEFORE going into the sun, so it really soaks in.
In the evenings between 4pm – 6.30 pm we’ll dip into the tanning oil. For a chilled 30 minutes or so. But the sun must be balmy and warm edging towards chilly. We do not want any basal skin cell carcinoma developing. We just want a little bit of warm sun.
Generally the plan is to never be in direct sun for more than 2 hours at a time, too.
And that’s it so far. What’s your tanning strategy? Do you have one? Is a ‘tanning strat’ lame to have? Is ’skin cancer cool’? Have also heard that taking fish liver oil helps develop a tan and stop burning. Any truth to that?
Getting seriously hyped for summer here.
D&G Cats’ Eyes from Sunglass Hut: Check.Wear them indoors all day and annoy everyone around you for being ‘one of those people’. I don’t care. I’m in too much pain.
Double Skinny Latte from Vida: Check. Take small sips continuously over course of the morning. Annoy everyone around you with your slurping sounds. Doesn’t matter because everyone’s already annoyed at you for wearing shades at your desk.
Spray La Mer’s Mist all over face in bid to ‘feel fresh’.
Smother skin in Elizabeth Arden’s Prevage Serum to smooth out pillow lines on face (due to combination of extreme dehydration and falling face down into bed).
Clinique Supermoisture Foundation: Check. Hide that tell-tale red face.
Pop 4 x Natrodale Milk Thistle in the hopes that doubling the dose will make up for not taking it the night before, like I should have.
Fake smile: Check. Hoping it ‘turns real’ any second now…
Thanks KWV ;)
