Van Hunks Interior

I haven’t eaten here yet, but it was recommended to me, so I went on a quick reccie this am and I just love the decor and the name and the theme. Do y’all know who Van Hunks was? He was an old Captain who lived in the shadow of Table Mountain who once challenged the devil to a smoking contest – and won. Quite a bro!

Click here to read the legend. You’ll find Van Hunks the restaurant on Kloof Street just opposite Tokyo, beyond Gainsborough. The menu looks good – will definitely be giving it a try.

How would you wear your D&Gs?

Ltd Edtn by Dolce & Gabbana

Happy Monday friends. Today we kick off a super fun D&G giveaway where you could win one of 2 pairs of limited edition Dolce & Gabbana Aviators sun, courtesy of Sunglass Hut, designed especially to commemorate the 2010 Soccer World Cup. They’re silver and green – an unusual colour set for a pair of shades which, in my opinion, just makes them more desirable. If you’d like to win yourself a pair, simply send me a pic of how you’d wear these babies. I ask because generally, people are quite conservative when it comes to choosing colourful shades, but colour is NOT scary – you just need to know how to wear it. Here are a few ways I’d wear these D&Gs:

I’d pair them with something light and summery. Think they’d go great with one of those Chanel quilted black leather purses (knockoffs currently in-store at Woolies, FYI). I’d also accent other green accents with them. Green, I think we can agree, does very well as an accent colour because it is not as obvious as, say, red. I definitely think Aviators are a GREAT alternative to the paedophile shades that seem to crop up everywhere, another case in point where a pair of these D&G Aviators would work better:

Another case of bad glasses happening to an otherwise awesome outfit. And then there’s this vibe (below) which takes itself way too seriously. However, had she the sense to pick herself up some green D&G’s to temper the severity of the whole affair, it could actually be quite fun. Actually, it couldn’t, this outfit is just bad.

Anyway you get the idea. Drop your D&G look in a mail to editor@capetowngirl.com before next Friday 11 June 2010 and you could have a pair of Limited Edition D&G Aviators in your hands. All this talk of World Cup soccer is getting me a little excited. Are you feeling it yet? Dare I say it… it’s… here… ! Good Luck! PS check out lookbook for some references to get you inspired.

Remember when Zoolander came out? And everyone was SO GRATEFUL to have a reason to pout in photos? ‘Blue Steel!’ was the phrase of the day! Crocs had JUST come out too… Anyway, Dentyne are taking aim at that whole vibe and have come right out there with these daring billboards that say it straight. And not only do they make their point, but they also have CTG’s little floaty smiley face in them, rage, raging against the Blue Steel. Look at me rage:

And yet further raging:

I have been worrying lately that I don’t do nearly enough to make the world a better place. I drive when I could walk. I use plastic bottles not glass. I eat meat when I know how mean they are to the cows. But since being a part of this Dentyne campaign to end the Blue Steel carnage, I actually feel a bit better about things. Next time you’re feeling a l’il down about what you’re not doing to save the planet, why not bust out a smile? It really is for the greater good!

PS look out for the Dentyne billboards in and around Cape Town and Jozi. They come out next week. There are 20 of them! Building an anti-pout army! ALSO, Have you seen the TV ad to go with this campaign? Is tres beautiful. Click here to check it out.

And for your enjoyment, a few pics from behind the scenes on this shoot. Note: I am NOT a model. Hence these were learning curves for me. Literally. My curves had to learn. To curve. Do you have ANY idea how hard it is to hold one’s body in such a way that one looks good on camera? It’s freaking difficult! Makeup done by the lovely Sebastine Pepler and photographer was Antonia Steyn.

netprophet: what a ride!

Netconference panel: Stephan Ekbergh, Sarah Lacey and Stephen Newton, hosted by Richard Hardiman

Went to the delightfully geeky technology and entrepreneurial-focused Netprophet conference last week, which has suddenly become amazing. it’s of the same standard as Design Indaba, except it’s totally free! i guess having Old Mutual funding much of it certainly helps. really – i was blown away. I was there as ‘media’, so put clothing over the lingerie to appear vaguely respectable.

Everyone there was on either a laptop, an iphone or an ipad. Felt right at home. Felt like, for once, no one was judging me for being on my phone. It felt good. A safe place. A happy place.

I won’t go into details over each speaker, but i’ll tell you who i thought stood out:

Rich Mulholland

Rich Mulholland, obviously. He had the crowd eating out of his clicker. I’ve never seen him speak before, and i love that he doesn’t take himself or his weblebrity status too seriously. Y’all shoulda seen some of the egos in the room, and Rich seemed pleasantly free from all that.

The Stephan Ekbergh, Sarah Lacey and Stephen Newton panel was great, because they were all such personalities. Between Stephan calling himself a “caveman” in comparison to Sarah, and Sarah’s no-bullshit, smart opinions (I’m kinda over cloud-computing too heh) and Stephen Newton’s experience, they made for good listening. And then Vinny Lingham tossing out the tweets about Stephan not investing in local startups, and then Stephan’s later blog post explaining that his entire business is South African anyway… oh my lord! Wonderful cross-mediumed geeky hilarity!

Adi “I don’t take funding” Pienaar had a good story too. Woo Themes have done undeniably well.

Adi Pienaar of Woo Themes

Highlights included the video intros – we even had a massive talking Seth Godin head! It’s like he was right there, with us. I felt close to him. I felt his presence.

Oh Seth! Blessed were we

Loved Vinny Lingham’s kid up there in a bear suit, for why have kids if not to dress them up as small animals? Right Frances darling?

Vinny and his kidbro

Well done to the Netprophet team, and to Old Mutual and the other sponsors, for sponsoring such an awesome and worthy event. It’s super inspiring. If you use the internet in your business in any way, you really should make an effort to attend next year.

Wine-tasting and dinner at maze

Eric from One&Only Cape Town

It was with much excitement that Frances Sauvage, Chris Rawlinson, Therese and myself found ourselves handing our keys over to the valets at One&Only Cape Town for an evening with Eric, renowned sommelier and dinner at Gordon Ramsey’s restaurant, maze. Just read Eric’s story:

“Eric moved from the Northern Cape to Cape Town in 1994/1995 and got a job at a bottle store. The bottle store was often quiet, so he used to read the back of wine labels and this is where his interest in wine developed. He managed to get his hands on a John Platter guide and through studying it, learnt more about the topic. Via the John Platter guide, Eric heard about the Cape Wine Academy and over time, Eric entered himself for courses at the Cape Wine Academy at this own expense. Eric left the bottle store and joined Woolworths as a shelf packer. He requested to work in the food & beverage section, and eventually his path crossed with Alan Mullins, legendary wine consultant for Woolworths. Alan took Eric under his wing, and the rest is history. Today Eric lives in Woodstock with his mother and his children, and he’s studying for a Diploma in Wine through the Cape Wine Academy.”

How fantastic is that! Our gracious hosts, Etienne and Adele, informed us that first we’d have a brief tour of One&Only Cape Town’s cellar, which holds over 5 000 bottles - just think about that! It’s a collection that took over 7 years in the making, which makes it older than the hotel itself.

Into the cellar, Frances leading the way

The most expensive bottle of wine in the collection is the Cheval Blanc from France, which will cost you a cool R17 000. So we ordered 5 bottles of that, just to kick off the mood.We proceeded to taste 4 different types of wine, including a Pinot Noir, a Cab Sauv, a Gewurtztraminer and a Chardonnay. Eric really put the pressure on the tasting notes which caused Etienne and Frances Sauvage to giggle like naughty children in the corner.

The Glen Carlou Pinot Noir

For starters we all sampled various dishes including wood fired prawns (amazing), Kentucky Fried Quail and Coleslaw (delicious) and the ultimate dish from the starters if you ask me, the soft-shell crab claws, which we all eyed greedily (oh you have it, no no, please, go ahead through gritted teeth).

For mains I ate the roasted kingklip on crayfish risotoo with bouillabaise sauce on a bed of garlic and parsley mussels. It tasted as good as it sounds. The others ate from the impressive meat selection – I will most definitely be ordering a steak next time. maze is, in fact, a grill restaurant, so steaks are their speciality.

The fillet

We were then granted the special privilege of a kitchen tour by maze head chef Phil Carmichael. Frances could not control herself, and proceeded to ply him with a slew of questions, from ‘What do you cook for yourself when you’re at home?’ and ‘What’s your last minute backup plan if you stuff everything up?’. Phil handled her like a pro, citing ‘A cheese and tomato sandwich’ and ’spaghetti bolognese’ as his answers.

Post kitchen tour we were presented with a spread of various desserts. The maze breakfast was an unusual if delicious take on cereal (unbelievably good, you have to try it), while the chocolate orange fondant was just out of this world, as was the peanut butter and jelly ice cream bar. The raspberry sorbet was refreshing and delicious, and the vanilla rice pudding was gentle and creamy. With all that wine in us, there was little conscience left to stop us pigging out, which is exactly what we did. And it was awesome!

Mmmm dessert

With our coffee came these tiny moist squares of brownie goodness, as well as some handmade orange turkish delight jellies.

Brownie delights!

There wasn’t room in my stomach, but I made room. The service was out of this world! It also looks awesome. The triple volume ceiling and the oversized lightbulbs create a sense of drama.

Frances Sauvage holding a Baked Alaska also creates a sense of drama

I’m definitely going back! Who’s with me? Click here to book yourself a dinner at maze.

Just order your own Soft-shell Crab Claws. I’m being serious.

Alphaville... generally stockier than the Spandau Ballet boys. Also all in black except for their drummer, who was in a white loose linen Elvis-type suit. That's why he's glowing like an angel. Rock 'n roll.

Went to see Spandau Ballet and Alphaville. it was an education since i wasn’t even in double digits when these bands were popular. Alphaville played first. i recognised Sounds Like A Melody, Big In Japan & Forever Young, but I didn’t recognise any Spandau Ballet. It’s cool, whatevs. They had nice suits and they were relatively in shape and they played well. It was a very well-behaved crowd, tapping feet politely a lot of the time and giving fellow concert-goers their personal space. The venue made it a little strange – Grand West is pretty freaky. Depressing casino vibes, fast food malls, fake sky. 80sparty. It was too real. It’s like it WAS the eighties! Gah! It felt good to get home back to 2010.

Spandau Ballet... think lots of sax solos.

One of the very inspiring posters they have all around Grand West.

Mark and Jo have been decorating a caravan for the Old Mac Daddy Elgin Hotel, the countryside cousin of the Grand Daddy in town, and theirs is called Dirkie Sanchez. Mark is pictured above. He’s a ‘method designer’. Below is the design Rikus did for one of the pull-down blinds in the caravan.

It’s all looking pretty rad! Track their progress here.
