So thought I’d just ‘check what’s new at 36Boutiques’ this am and ended up adding half the site to my shopping cart. It’s not my fault though, there are such lovely things to be purchased, and it doesn’t require that I leave my bed. ie. this morning’s spree is actually an act of virtue. Here are some of the things I picked out:

Sucker for a one-shoulder and this looks so lovely and comfy. Can’t resist.

Love this – the colour blocking gives a flattering shrug-like effect.

Fitted and just plain LBD goodness.

Been aching for a pair of these nude Melissa wedges for a while now. Next pair will be the nudes with the red strip down the heel – desperately trying to hunt some down.

Delicious Monster pendant reminds me of childhood holidays in Natal.

Love this scarf by Poetry.

Absolutely obsessed with this lioness ring by Oh Dear Megan. Love it!
Okay so that’s the morning’s haul. Now because I am a benevolent blogger, and 36 Boutiques is SA’s premier online shopping destination, if you like any of the items above, you could win your favourite. All you need to do is click this link, sign up to 36 Boutiques and then email me the link to the item you like the most from my Monday Shopping Spree (editor@capetowngirl.com).
Pretty okay for a Monday, yes?
Oh and, today is the last day you get 20% off if you spend R600 or more at 36B. Just a friendly FYI.

Ventured out of the city and into the winelands with MEJ & LA yesterday for a lazy, early autumn lunch at Uitsig. Ever the carnivores we ordered the fillet and were not even slightly disappointed. A glass of Graham Beck Brut rose went down just beautifully before a lazy walk around the estate in the sunshine. Cape Town is perfect this time of year – how I wish autumn would last forever.

I’ve been coveting a pair for a while, ever since I saw Kate Middleton wearing a pair in fact. Kate Middleton, and every other celebrity under the sun. Seriously – just google Hunter Boots Celebrity if you don’t feel like doing your timesheets and want a little shopping inspiration.

I was recently shot for HEIR MAGAZINE by up-and-coming photographer Cara-Lee Gevers. You can download the magazine here to read the interview or you can read it online. We had so many amazing shots from this shoot – massive thanks to both Cara-Lee and makeup artist Natasha Papadapoulos , who are magic makers. I’ll be posting some outtakes from the shoot in the next few days. This shimmery mermaid dress, I must just tell you, was made by Cara-Lee Gevers herself. Just that kind of photographer who goes to the ends of the earth to get the shots she wants. And so much fun to work with too. Thank you again ladies and the team at HEIR.
PS the gorgeous grey dress below is Roberto Cavalli and it’s from ourwardrobe.co.za.

My shades equivalent of the ’smoky eye’. Wear with knee-high suede black boots and skinny jeans. Winter I am coming for you! Picked these up at Sunglass Hut, only place in the country you can get Versace shades.
I actually went in because I wanted the MEDUSA shades – which actually have the Versace Medusa emblem PRINTED ON THE LENS. Behold:

I had this idea of wearing them as I walked through the mall, glaring at anyone thinking ‘what kind of idiot wears their shades in the mall?’ and turning them to stone, just a fantasy I have had since I watched Clash of the Titans around age 8. But it was not to be – the Medusa’s (and any version of an aviator really ) look appalling on me. That’s okay. I love these smoky eyes, even if feel less like an ancient mythical being with malicious super powers than I do an LA soccer mom.

Be still my beating colour-blocked heart. Such a great update on the grey trench, which I tend to live in in winter. From Country Road, duh.

Managed to swing by the new seasonal MAC makeup preview last week. These are obviously international trends so not terribly relevant as we go into autumn and winter, but it was informative no less. There are four key looks, Ath-Elite (which is sporty and striking and pictured above and below), Nouv-Eau which is like a romantic revival, Ore-Inspired (lots of metallics and oranges) and Neo-N (very bright).

Nouv-Eau pictured above.

Ore-inspired.
I’m a big MAC makeup fan. It’s always been the choice of makeup artists that have worked on me, and they have always made me look super awesome with it. It is, however, the kind of makeup you need to be taught how to use. I have had a few misadventures.
To me, MAC is the makeup equivalent of the triple-fold-out coki sets you used to get as a kid. Or the full range of Dala Acrylics. And it’s much like art in practise. You need to understand colour and form. You know how one of the first lessons you get in painting is that you should never use black on your canvas, because black is actually a combination of a million different colours and pot black can be too harsh and weird? It’s that vibe. Which means makeup artistry requires an eye, and confidence in your brushstrokes. God bless makeup artists.
I mean, you might have been here too, where you see a look in the magazine, and the girl has this amazing blue eyeshadow on and almost no foundation and it just looks so awesome you think I AM GOING TO TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT so off you go to MAC and you buy the blue and you put it on your eyes but instead of looking like a glamourous creature of the night you look like something that’s been attacked by a creature in the night and lo and behold it’s because the model’s blue eyeshadow was actually made up of pink and yellow and purple and some kind of contouring foundation that somehow makes the blue, and that magic Mac charged water they sprinkle on your face for dewy skin. You need a little guidance, especially if you’re not a trained makeup artist, so coming to an event like this and seeing the artists get creative and how they create certain looks was pretty interesting.
Thanks to MAC for the invitation.

I attended the one-night-only exhibition / pop-up installation (which I actually thought would continue much longer, or I’d have blogged about it) called Insight Out: Paul du Toit framed by Persol which was hosted by Sunglass Hut. If you’re not familiar with Paul du Toit, there is little hope for you if your aim to consider yourself someone on top of popular art culture. From his website:
“Paul du Toit is a South African artist who has carved a unique niche in the international arena. Beyond being able to access and be exhibited globally, du Toit has simultaneously continued to create a very personal form of art that has not adjusted itself to the demands of a commercial art market. Du Toit’s art is his own; a linear, phantasmic world that he has created from his mind and experiences.” – www.pauldutoit.com

In addition to showcasing some of Paul’s more familiar work, there were also Persol inspired installations, and some of the brand’s most iconic shades were on display.

It was a fantastic evening. Paul’s work is very feel-good, as were the apple martinis.

Thank you to Sunglass Hut and Persol for hosting the evening. Click here to get a feel for this season’s Persols.
