the fashionista genes run in the family

Beyond cute.

My friend Emma is the girl in the studio who is always well-dressed – think heels, and a key ’seasonal trend piece’ and perfectly styled hair. It looks like her daughter Lula is embracing her fashionable tendencies at the tender age of 2 – please appreciate these matching mum & daughter Vivienne Westwoods!

My brain hurts from the cuteness.

Emma bought both pairs at Dillon & Jada in the Cape Quarter.

thanks KWV

Had a delicious 3-course dinner at the Food Room last night, hosted by KWV. Have you been there? Check it out.

It was a small, intimate dinner and a bunch of other bloggers were invited. We ate seared tuna steaks, sirloin with rosti and creme brulee. I drank KWV’s Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon all night – cosy and chocolatey and warm because winter decided to ‘come on over’ for the evening.

It was the kickoff dinner in a series of dinners to be hosted by us bloggers. Well, they don’t have to be dinners. They can be crazy parties. Or chill parties. Or anything really, as long as they involve wine. Which nobody’s complaining about I’m sure. This dinner involved quite a lot of wine. And then out came the hats.

Okay now @brandslut_ & I have hats

And then came the Mo’s

And now we have mo's! #thankskwv :)

And then it was time to go home. Good times. Thanks KWV :)

Only One launches at House of Fashion: Macarons, Bubbly & Dresses

MEJ & CTG went to the launch of Only One at House of Fashion at 153 Loop Street last night. Only One is a new concept in shopping – let’s call it an ‘invitation-only Fashion Club’. You can join by being invited, or you can apply to become a member. As a member, instead of dealing with the usual mall-ish hoi-poloi with their mall-ish ‘can I help you?’, you can just book an appointment to shop, and when you’re there you get the services and guidance of a stylist, which takes a lot of the stress out of making decisions. Once you’re set on a dress and a look, you are fitted right there and then to your personal measurements, and can walk out with a one-of-a-kind beautiful piece that is tailored to your body.

Take a moment. Comprehend this. Can you say OH MY GOSH loud enough? The launch was lavish and lovely. Champagne, macarons, and dresses, dresses, dresses. We tried on seven thousand four hundred before we made a shortlist.

The Face of Markham: let’s unpack this

11 Nov 2010, Posted by Cape Town Girl in CTG recommends, Girlcrushes, guys stuff, hilarious, south africa, 6 Comments

It is with a little dance that I present to you this gem of a website called ‘The Face of Markham’. We’ve been very excited about it all morning, so much so that CTG has spilt the milk from her Vida e Caffe  all over her D&Gs from Sunglass Hut.

NO MATTER. Let us unpack this wonderful online entity a little. I have taken the liberty of plucking a few of what I believe to be the ‘ripest fruits’, the ‘peachiest peaches’, the ’sharpest tools in the 6-pack’. Let’s do this.

Andrew, I know how you’re feeling. It’s hard being this perfect. What with that straight nose, that well-rounded jaw, that Adonisian innocence. Tell me, when you are eating Calamari and Prawns (your fav food) do you contemplate how hard it is for the rest of us to deal with your profile without ’spilling our milk’? I’d spill all sorts of things to see you in your shorts  and your flip flops.

Lee. Lee, Lee, Lee, Lee, Lee, Lee, LEE. Just look at those lips. Those eyes. You got something Bambi going on, yet I just know that beneath that striped shirt you’ve got guns big enough to blow Brett Kebble back to life. And the fact that you name your mom as your role model bodes well for us ladies. Men ALWAYS treat their girlfriends the way they treat their mothers. PS I like All-Stars too. Come over and I will show you mine.

Well hello there rugged Reinhardt. Nice sideburns. Well, I’m not actually sure how I feel about those. But I do like your mussed up hair. And your, um, gold chain. I’m just gonna go with it being silver and ‘looking gold in that light’. Of course, what really drew me to you is the fact that you say your favourite movie is Twilight. Come to think of it, there is a little Edward in you… Anyway a man who likes Twilight is hard to find. And here, girls, is one of them!

Warren! Where have you been hiding sweetie? Oh, I see. Joburg. Typical. What’s this ‘playing in a band’ business you’re on about? You must be a cool dad. Do you take your kids to watch you at your shows like Britney does? Stir-Fry as your favourite food… now THAT definitely says something about you. I’m not sure what though. I’m going to think about it a bit longer while you smile at me.

Mmmm mmm MMMMMM now WHO DO WE HAVE HERE??? Is that Cape Town’s Favourite Son‘? We’ve endlessly crushed on Shaun for years. It has resulted in many awkward moments at social blog events involving alcohol, blushing and overshare. We will leave the rest up to your imagination. We have also crushed on Shaun’s girlfriend for years now, too. Have you SEEN her? Big green eyes? Gorgeous rounded hips? Killer Salsa moves? Give her a kiss for me Shaun.

What do you think of this girls?

Is THE FACE OF MARKHAM the best thing since Idols???

Paul’s Boutique bags – get them at the Waterfront

10 Nov 2010, Posted by Cape Town Girl in cape town, fashion, girl stuff, lifestyle, shopping, south africa, 0 Comments

Are you guys familiar with Paul’s Bags? I got one as a gift from a friend who went to London and went ‘Paul Mad’, and this one was sent in by a reader (thanks Shelly) who spotted it at that Cult*ure (however you spell it) store at the Waterfront. The bags are all ‘quite mad’ - a bit like Chanel threw a party and invited Burberry, who invited Gucci, who invited Guess, who invited Toys R Us, and then they all got drunk and had sex and 9 months later gave birth to these bags.

Food-free white wines from CTG’s Official Wine Expert

Good day all girls of Cape Town and other miscellaneous readers,

I trust you are all well.

I apologise for my long absence. You see I was travelling Europe meeting
beautiful people just like you (think Milano_Girl: long legged and immaculately dressed;
Amsterdam_Girl: hair let down, relaxed, has a whip in the closet; Napoli_Girl: loud, forthright,
proud; etc) and finding out what wine they drink so I could come back and offer you some of their
 vinous preferences.

But before I get into any of that we must get our own house in order. You see Cape Town girl
opened a bottle of wine this weekend that I had given her for her birthday a while back. (I know, it should have been Champagne – I still can’t look her in the eyes).

The wine, Miles Mossop’s Saskia 2007, is a robust blend of Chenin Blanc and Viognier. The end result
is a wine that has rich flavour, think honey suckle, apricots and mangoes, with an alcohol of 14.5%. It
is a wine that is delicious on its own, but a slightly spicy dish would compliment it tremendously.

Opening the bottle of wine @HarryReginald gave me for my birthday back in July

When I asked Cape Town Girl if she ate anything alongside the wine she responded:

“We have
stopped eating and come to terms with the fact that it’s either food OR wine. For the sake of
summer.”

This is completely understandable. As the days grow longer and the temperatures rise clothes
are naturally shed. And as much as a healthy portion of foie gras or pork belly would have been a
delightful pairing with the Saskia, they do nothing for the waistline.

Here are some recommended wines for wines sake, food-free-friendly wines;

wines that need
neither sauce nor soup, rib-eye nor relish; wines whose most important character is drinkability and
calling card is freshness.

The most obvious white wine to sip on in summer without having to chew on anything is Sauvignon
Blanc. So obvious it hardly needs writing about, so obvious that I feel compelled to suggest you try
something new this summer. But if you must here are two

Steenberg make a variety of Sauvignon Blancs that all offer something a little different. I’d go for the
standard offering for summer. It’s crisp and clean with some tropical fruit flavours as well as a little grassy action. A class act.

Buy a bottle of Iona to impress your Sauvignon fanatic friends. From the cooler region of Elgin this is
easily one of my favourite Sauvignon Blancs. It is always elegant with gooseberries, herbaceousness
and some flinty bits. To personify: It turns heads without its tits hanging out.

Harry (left) taking in some foreign culture (by hugging some foreign people)

Another crowd pleaser is Chardonnay. One of the aspects most loved about chardonnay is its
buttery creaminess. While this is delicious, it can get out of hand and you end up with a wine that is
goupy, oaky and sweet; in other words FAT. So to avoid this here are two wooded Chardonnays that
give the butteriness but are lean, angular and refreshing.

I freaking love Paul Cluver’s Chardonnay. It’s full of lemon and zingy lime with that toastiness that
you all love. The refreshing acidity means that you can drink glass after glass without your palate
getting tired.

OK, this is a pricey one, but should you require a treat this summer or have someone to impress who
likes Chardonnay, then this is the one. Ataraxia’s Chardonnay is pure, creamy, bright with pear and
almonds and oh god oh god I want one now.

Harry practising his 'snifting' skills

The last suggestion of food-free-friendly white varieties is Chenin Blanc. Chenin Blanc is starting to
be drunk more but tends to be forgotten, finding itself in a supporting role to the more illustrious
Sauvignon Blanc, and showy Chardonnay. So which Chenins are good for a summer without food? I’d go for those with as little wood influence
as possible. Two to try would be Beaumont’s Chenin and the Raats Original. These are both
excellent Chenin Blancs at good prices. Offering freshness, complexity and richness without you
having to sell a kidney for a good bottle.

I don’t really care which ones you drink, but start drinking Chenin. There is one for every type of
palate. Don’t believe me? Mail me what you normally like and I’ll find a Chenin for you. – harryhaddon@gmail.com. Another option is white blends. My white blend of the moment is Hermit on the Hill’s Sauvignier – a
spunky blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier. It’s a wine with pigtails; joyous and relaxed. I will be
drinking cases of this during summer.

Next up… food-free reds, but that is a tale for another day. Read more from Harry on his blog Wine&I here.

The trade goes on: Last week’s ca$h profits, this week’s share purchases, Naspers, China and Lady Gaga

08 Nov 2010, Posted by Cape Town Girl in CTG recommends, advertising, blogs, cape town, lifestyle, money money money, south africa, 11 Comments

So our trade from last week is still in play – we were up to R600 profit this am, but it’s dropped and have now made a R250-odd profit thus far and Ollie tells me he is happy with the way things are going so we’re letting it continue (even though things were looking quite bad at 2am this morning, when we were just breaking even, somehow the numbers did their thing and balanced out by the time I got the call from Globaltrader at 10am this morning). Good news! Feeling encouraged. Feeling like not a total numbers dufus.

Anyway I have been doing some of my own ‘fundamental research’ (where you look at the business as a whole, it’s past, present and future, it’s ethics, what its staff say about working there, etc) and I asked Ollie about buying some Naspers shares (will tell you why later), and I sent him to this link and asked if he thought it was a good idea. He then drew me this graph, and used it to help explain why he thought it was a good  idea:

How funky is this graph? Wish we coulda done this in school. Would have made ‘how to be a mogul’ classes so much more fun. Anyway here’s what Ollie explained: you see that grey block? It shows that Naspers stock has been trending upwards. Which is a good thing. He was slightly worried however, because the graph has ‘broken through’ at the bottom there (where the little white line falls out of that uptrend grey block). So what he recommended is, instead of just buying it right out, to put an order in (which you can do from the Global Trader desktop app) to purchase shares when they hit a certain price. In this instance, a good price to buy at would be R359,05. So that’s what we’re doing.

That Stop-Loss of R350.89 in red letters - that is like a trading ‘trip switch’. You put a stop-loss in to make sure you don’t lose too much money. So when the share price falls below R350.89, the trade will automatically be closed, preventing a future where I ‘eat catfood from tins’ and ‘live in the alley behind the Louis Vuitton store at the Waterfront’.

Ollie will let me know as soon as the order goes through so we can start watching the Naspers shares.

PS. Why Naspers?

Well, they are an SA company whom I find interesting. They own like, over half of China’s internet. Their CEO fires people who can’t move with the digital times with rampant abandon (I respect that, I would do the same in my own company) and they’re pioneers in the publishing industry, which I respect, too.

If you look at publishing in this country without any sentimentality, you really have to wonder how any of the magazines still make money, since most of them are failing to even acknowledge the fact that the internet now delivers new trends in fashion and popculture daily, making the traditional magazine contents page largely redundant by the time it lands in your postbox. And the rest? Another article about how to deal with the office bitch? Really? Um, scuse me while I go read a 10-page investigative journalism piece on How Lady Gaga Rose To Fame on NYmag.com – nothing personal, it’s just more interesting. SA media houses largely don’t seem to accept that they need to change what they do in order to make themselves relevant again. Naspers, however, is all over that. So they get my money.

PPS. Just got a text telling me my order went through. I’m now a proud Naspers shareholder. 100 shares. Mine. God it feels good!

PPPS. Click here to sign up with a Global Trader Simulated Account and practise trading until you feel confident to use real money. It’s really not as hard or complicated as you think it is! Plus you could win R10 000 to trade with. Win-win, as they say.

CTGs LA & SB attend the launch of the new Estee Lauder / Bobbi Brown / Clinique / La Mer counters

08 Nov 2010, Posted by Cape Town Girl in BFFs, CTG recommends, LA, beauty products, bloggers, cape town, cosmetics, fashion, girl stuff, lifestyle, shopping, south africa, 0 Comments

LA & SB hit up the Table Bay hotel for a super glam VIP breakfast to celebrate the opening of the new Estee Lauder, Clinique, La Mer and Bobbi Brown beauty counters at Edgars V&A Waterfront last week. The food was delicious and it was a great networking event – everyone in beauty and beauty blogging was there.

The girls got their makeup done, they got to sample gorgeously indulgent La Mer products and enjoy the brand new beauty counters, all before anyone else.

And they walked away with some fabulous goodie bags filled with Bobbi Brown, Clinique, Estee Lauder and La Mer products. It was extremely naughty of Estee Lauder to spoil the ladies like this! :) But nobody’s complaining.

Get down to the new counters at Waterfront Edgarsthey really are stunning! The lighting is so close to daylight you’ll get a good idea of how your makeup will actually look on your skin. They are also very spacious and well-organised. They get a manicured thumbs up from LA & SB.
