‘If you put a face on a strawberry, that’s what gets me turned on.’

It sounds silly, but it does seem to make sense within the context of this interview with Katy Perry, conducted by Nylon while they shot her for their cover. I like Katy for the same reason I like Lady Gaga – she writes her own music, she comes up with her whole style, she sings live, she’s smart and outspoken and her look is gorgeous. A ‘conceptual pop artist’, if you will. Plus I do love an all-rounder!

The Run Diary: Amanda’s Playlist

23 Mar 2010, Posted by Cape Town Girl in cape town, lifestyle, music, the run diaries, 1 Comments

This week’s playlist is actually a general exercise playlist, submitted by Amanda, who does’t run but she walks at an incline and she steps – 2 disciplines not to be scoffed at. I personally have not conquered the Step Machine yet, so ja – respect. I follow Amanda on twitter and you should too because she is smart, funny and very informed, sometimes all at the same time. You should also check out her blog here.

Amanda writes:

“Okay, so I don’t technically “run”. I wish I could, but my knees are knocked from my former career as a child tennis star (s’true). So I walk. Fast. And up a very steep incline (gradient 7.5 on the treadmill). I can also go for miles on the step machine. I love the stepper and in my heyday could go an hour non-stop. Now i spend 20 minutes on the stepper and 20 minutes on the treadmill with some weights thrown in for good measure. I also love that most men suck at the stepper and give up after 10 minutes, staring in wonderment at us girls. Ha.

I’m more of a “great outdoors” exercise person and would rather be surfing or hiking. Between Kaapstad’s south-easter, the miserable winters and my part-time job as a phone-sex worker, this isn’t always possible. So I’m not a gym bunny (more of a gym Labrador), which means I can’t survive it without my iPod. Afro-pop, cheese, drum ‘n bass and a touch of hip-hop keeps me going.” – Amanda

Amanda’s Playlist:

Hole in the Head – Sugarbabes
Try – Gazelle
Sugar – Armand Van Helden
Calabria 2007 – Enur feat. Natasha
Fort Knox – Goldfish
Hip Hop – Dead Prez
Outta Town – Mix ‘n Blend

Memories – David Guetta & Kid Cudi
Boom Boom Pow – Black Eyed Peas
Starstruck – 3oh!3

Back to the nineties with Kesha

17 Mar 2010, Posted by Cape Town Girl in Celebrity, Ponderings, music, 6 Comments

Does anyone else get a major 90s feeling when you look at promo shots of ‘party girl’ pop singer Kesha?

The 90s. Glitter and metallic makeup.

Makes me feel like I’ve just started school and want something real purty for my Spacecase.

Makes me feel like I wanna get my belly pierced and put a glo-stick in my mouth.

Makes me feel like I want a squashy plastic yin-yang I can wear round my neck.

Makes me want to ‘frost my tips’.

Makes me want ‘friendship rings’ (the silver ones from American Swiss)

Makes me want to ‘get a pair of Joe Soaps’

Makes me want to spend R10 on that gimmicky drink that had balls floating around in it (Orbitz..?)

Makes me want to bop along to I’m Blue Dabadee Dabadai

What you guys think? Are you feeling this or are the nineties ‘too fresh in our minds‘ to already be hitting them up for style cues. Perhaps Kesha’s age means she missed the nineties? Which means all tweens/tween missed the nineties? Which means they are destined to repeat it? Will all teenagers – always – be stuck in the nineties? Will I’m Too Sexy For My Shirt shirts make a comeback?

These are terrifying questions, which MUST be asked. Sorry if I wrecked your day.

Lady Gaga speaks out against antiquated habit of phoning people in new video

12 Mar 2010, Posted by Cape Town Girl in Celebrity, fashion, music, music video, 0 Comments

I’m thrilled to see Lady Gaga’s new mindfuck of a video tackling a very topical issue, namely that phoning people is an outmoded form of communication. It’s really the cherry on top of a cake made from reams of supporting literature as to why phoning people is invasive and unnecessary. Please enjoy! This is a visual FEAST!

The Run Diaries: Emily’s Playlist

09 Mar 2010, Posted by Cape Town Girl in music, running, the run diaries, 4 Comments

Meet fellow CTG Emily! Em also loves to run, and she’s been kind enough to share her running story as well as her current playlist! She is also a totally kiff chick, so I recommend you follow her on twitter too.

“After a medical diagnosis shot me back to reality and out of early-twenties debauchery, I re-evaluated my lifestyle. I was partying up a storm, pretty much every night, drinking like a student, eating badly and getting zero exercise. Oh yeah and I was smoking 20 Stuyvies a day. Eating a few greens, getting an early night and choosing a spritzer over a martini isn’t difficult, but getting fit was something I had no idea how to begin. Because I’m the kind of girl who needs a push, I set a goal for myself to reach. For years I had been trying to complete the final exam of my Associates Diploma in Contemporary Dance (yes, at one point in my life I was thin and fit enough to be a dancer, that time passed quickly) but I’d always had excuses – I couldn’t get to the classes on time, I was too weak in cardio, my upper body strength wasn’t developed, I was too stressed at work.

But the need for some kind of prize, some kind of reward to work towards was at this stage, non-negotiable. So I registered for the exam, started going to classes and then got myself a personal trainer. He taught me how to run. It was really terrible most of the time in the beginning. I loathed it. I made up fake excuses to get out of running and often felt like crying at the thought of how badly I did each time I got on the treadmill. But gradually it got better, slightly easier, slightly less puke-inducing. And then I got an MP3 player and my entire running life changed.

Music is more important to some than to others, but if you’re a music-lover, you’ll know that nothing improves physical performance like a song you just can’t sit still too. I find hip-hop works best for me, they’re good motivation tracks, help you disappear inside yourself and work well for the more competitive of us. But mostly the tracks that really start me smiling are the ones I love for personal reasons.  Running is now my daily sweet relief.

It’s been 9 months now, I’ve lost 14 kilos and dropped 3 dress sizes, but the best part is in December last year I got my Associates Diploma.
Here’s a soundtrack I’m loving at the moment. Hope you enjoy it.” – Emily

Harder faster stronger – Daft Punk

Work It – Missy Elliot

Lose Yourself – Eminem

Breathe – Prodigy

Remember the name – Fort Minor

Rock Superstar – Cypress Hill

Till I collapse – Eminem

For my People – Missy Elliot

Around the world – Daft Punk

Love Beyonce’s Tretchikoff-inspired vibe she’s got going here. Found it on Ms Gaga’s site – clearly the gags loves the artistes. Can’t complain!

His videos are always super pretty. The music? Nice. But the video! It’s like a Warhol painting that’s alive! Check out Paint Your Face below. (thanks Perez)

Am avid runner. Is funny, because always swore ‘would never run unless absolutely necessary’ (via Richard). But am now complete addict who can barely go a day without it. If you don’t run, it can seem like quite a hectic thing to get into. It is, but my friends, your iPod is your friend. And since have been getting more and more questions about what I listen to when I’m running, I thought I’d start posting my playlists here. Now y’all can laugh (yes, there’s Miley Cyrus), but first look at this picture of me in a bikini, then laugh. Will be updating The Run Diaries more often now, so stay tuned if you want to get into it, or if you just want some musical inspiration.
