We don’t normally do this, but we’d like to give a special shout-out to Vince from North Carolina in the US of A, who is a General in the Corps Marines (in which he’s been serving for 12 years now). We hear Vince recently came to South Africa for a holiday, and that he loves it. A little birdie told us that he quite likes reading CTG, too. Well, we’re sending the love right back at you, Vince! Please give little Sophia Grace a big hug and a kiss for us, okay? She is just too beautiful. When she’s a bit older, we’ll take her out and show her how to be a CapeTownGirl ;) Thanks for reading CTG, we appreciate your support.

Much love, CTG, PD & LA

Joburg, holograms and a secret iPhone 4 launch

23 Sep 2010, Posted by Cape Town Girl in CTG, advertising, bloggers, iphone, joburg, kindness of strangers, shopping, south africa, technology, 3 Comments

OMG. Behold my new iPhone 4 plus 500MB data & airtime every month! MTN I love you! #iYoba!

Last week I get a cryptic phonecall from Iain, another SA blogger you may know as @pleasefindthis. He says, ‘I’m confirming you for an event next week Tuesday. You’ll get flight details later in the week.’ Being a curious and carefree kinda gal who’s always up for a crazy mission, I said ‘There’s no way I’m flying to Joburg for a party dude.’ To which he replied, ‘You will regret not coming to this party. Trust me.’

I don’t know what it was but something, something in his voice just said iPhone 4 (4, 4, 4,…), so I decided to go with it.

I kept it to myself since Iain informed me there was a ‘media embargo’ on the event, but could barely contain the excitement by the time I found myself in a car with @marcforrest, another SA blogger who’d been invited in a similarly cryptic fashion. We were taken to a hotel in Midrand by the super friendly Jonas, who’d been hired as our driver. We arrived at the hotel with the instruction to meet in Room 3 at 3pm. In Room 3 there was a long table at with 10 iPhones lined up on it. Pre-charged, and re-packed, so we could get the full ‘opening experience’. We signed super-basic, hassle-free contracts for a year’s worth of pre-loaded data and airtime on MTN microsims, and the very well-mannered Raphael from MTN helped us set up the devices.

“Just to be clear,” said Iain, “You guys are under no obligation to blog or tweet about this. We, on behalf of MTN, just feel that if any people deserve this device, it’s you guys. We’re giving you data and calltime for a year but you don’t even need to keep the sim – use it, don’t use it. Now enjoy your phones, see you at the party later.”

Awesome, right? Just made me want to explode in tweets and blogposts about how much I love MTN. Wouldn’t you feel the same way? A service provider taking care of bloggers, their most loyal customers and avid users? Unheard of! No frills and fuss – they just got to the point without pretense. Guys – this is groundbreaking consumer relations. I mean, have you ever? Others who got phones included ChrisRoperZA, Grif from Watkykjy, Uno de Waal, Khaya Dlanga, SizweNdhlomo, Angie from iFashion, Pippa Tshabalala from The Verge and Seth from 2oceansvibe. There were some more… it’s all a facetime blur.

Please behold the madness that is @khayadlanga's digital life

Khaya Dlanga's deranged digital life exposed - 2 Blackberries, 2 iPhones.

The party was a sweet gig. It was freaking amazing. Every single surface was an LED screen, which  had a countdown clock on it. We drank Zen martinis. We ate sushi. And then the lights flickered out and the phones made this dramatic entrance, descending in glowing pods from the ceiling, hands grabbing at them. No jokes. Video to come later.

Iphone 4s descended from the ceiling! #iyoba

A hand grabs frantically at a demo iPhone 4 as one of the pods descends

Countdown clocks to midnight on all the screens #iyoba

The bar - also an LED

LED insanity at last night's MTN launch - all the walls were screens #iyoba

Screen madness!

Real holograms at the iPhone 4 launch party are super #iyoba

A real life hologram! Video also to follow later

The lovely Angie aka @iFashionToYou

Once the phone was officially launched, Fistaz Mixwell and Roger Goode took over and that’s when the tequila started. More of the general LED madness:

The round LED lifted up off the bar to reveal the DJ

tequilas

Not sure if you'll be able to process this image, but basically, the tequila in the foreground is resting on the bar, and the screens in the background are projections of the DJ being filmed live from above him. Look closely, you'll see his decks.

LED madness

More LED madness.

tweetstream

The official twitter hashtag for the night was #iYoba, and there was a tweetstream coming up huge on one of the walls.

A huge thank you to MTN for flying us out and showing us such a good time. And for the phones. Those are cool too. From the way twitter was going on, MTN definitely threw the better launch party. We had to wear shades to deal with the light from all the STARS.Whew – Joburg – like the internet – is completely in the grip of iPhone fever, by the way. It’s madness! You can’t not get caught up in it!

Guys, the iPhone 4 is mindblowingly amazing. No doubt I will harp on about it a lot here, you have been warned. HD camera and movie editing on the handset – this is going to take our video vibe to a whole new level. Click here to check out iPhone 4 pricing with MTN. Apparently you can get one on a R379 a month contract and the phone comes free. Going to upload my videos asap! Click here to check out my full flickr set.

Thank you to all who nominated CTG for a Best New Blog Award in this year’s SA Blog Awards. Very nice of you! Would bake you all cupcakes but I don’t bake cupcakes, I just eat them. Same goes for macarons. I just create the demand. Anyway, you can now be a part of the voting process - click here and it will select CTG from the list and you can cast your vote for me in the Blog Award Finals. Or you can just click on the massive blog awards badge on the top right of the page. Hopefully we can take this ‘chick blogger’ thing to a whole new level! Maybe even ‘release my own fragrance’ (smells like Macarons) or ‘design a limited edition range for a department store’ (smells like Macarons) or ‘release an album’ (all about Macarons..)

Thank you again. I really do appreciate the support.

Sincerely,

xxCTG

London CTG reader Jared sent me these ridiculous pictures yesterday, they are courtesy of his friend Lulu Caballero. Please delight in the wonder!

I mean is there ever anything better than getting a package of puppies from London??? That’s right. There isn’t. Thanks Jared and Lula.

CTG rocking some VC style

29 Jun 2010, Posted by Cape Town Girl in CTG recommends, a good cause, iphone, kindness of strangers, technology, 3 Comments

As a seasoned member of CT’s blogville, having been blogging for 7 billion years and having been a multiple recipient of 18 thousand blogging and blog-related awards in the field of bloggable blogging, I pick up a few things, namely that SA digital entrepreneur bros are looking for cash injections, the ever elusive Venture Capital. Well, on that topic, my dear friend @swartperd recently made me aware of a fantastic, bite-sized VC site called Kickstarter, which allows the everyman to invest in the everyman’s dreams. I love it and have thus far invested in a couple of projects, including The First iPhone 4 Cinematic Film as well as a South African collection of bicycle portraits. Pretty sweet. Looking forward to seeing the fruits of my small but meaningful donations. Go check it out – there’s something very special about watching a project grow when you have a little vested interest in it. I imagine this is what having children is like, just less mission and more reward.

It’s Macaroon Mania!

30 Mar 2010, Posted by Cape Town Girl in CTG, cape town, hotels, kindness of strangers, lifestyle, 7 Comments

And these ones are seriously contenders for the ‘Ultimate Macaroon’ title. I present One&Only Macaroons from One&Only Hotel Cape Town, which appeared upon my desk this morning as if by magic! That, my friends, is why One&Only is called a 6-star hotel – you get room service when you’re not even in your room!

What a fantastic way to start a Tuesday

If I were to describe these Macaroons, I’d say that their candy-brittle shells crumble into creamy, sweet vanilla-chocolate-jammy centres… close your eyes and imagine it. Taste the magic of the macaroons. Happy Tuesday! PS. Still not familiar with Macaroons (where have you been)? Click here to read up.

Endearmints send basket of love

16 Mar 2010, Posted by Cape Town Girl in CTG, kindness of strangers, 3 Comments

Guys, this is one of those stories that will make you all misty-eyed and warm inside. A few days ago, I tweeted about how I have a problem, namely that I cannot control myself around endearmints, and today, this gets delivered to me! Unbelievable! Clearly someone at Cadbury (who makes Endearmints) is on their game! But now I have an even BIGGER problem…

Have NO idea how am going to stop once I start. Big BIG problem.

Play Chatroulette, get serenaded by guy in green hoodie!

16 Mar 2010, Posted by Cape Town Girl in kindness of strangers, technology, 1 Comments

Gotta thank Kate in the twittersphere for this, it’s just too good not to share. Have you played chatroulette yet? If not, clicky over and have yourself a spin. Chatroulette is what the name implies - a game of video chat roulette, ie. you don’t know who you’ll be chatting with. But there’s video, so if the person in front of you looks a l’il dodge, you can just click ‘next’ and you’ll be on to the next chatter. This guy, however, takes it to a whole new level by serenading the people who end up chatting with him. It’s a beautiful thing to behold.

This is what I like to think of as ‘the kindness of strangers’. Getting my ukulele ready here. Let’s play… chatroulette!
