Could you be the Estee Lauder Beauty Glamour Girl?

25 Jan 2012, Posted by Cape Town Girl in beauty, beauty products, competitions, girl stuff, 2 Comments

Do you love trying out beauty and makeup products? Do you like writing and having an opinion and sharing your life online? Does the idea of receiving all the new Estee Lauder products to try out for yourself and sharing your thoughts on them for other Estee Lauder fans sound appealing? Do you one day aspire to get into beauty or journalism? Looking to get exposure for your beauty blog? Then you should probably head on over here and put yourself forward as Estee Lauder’s Beauty Glamour Girl.

From the official statement:

“The Beauty Glamour Girl will receive Estée Lauder products to review and share her reviews with the ladies on the Estée Lauder South Africa Facebook page. She will be the first to try new Estée Lauder products, attend launches and report on all things beauty. This opportunity is open to all ladies who wish to pursue their love for writing and sharing their opinions with others.”

The closing date for the applications is soon – 27 January - so submit your entry asap. You have to answer 3 questions, which you’ll see when you click ‘Apply Now’. Those questions are:

1) What makes a woman beautiful?

2) What does the Estee Lauder brand mean to you?

3) Why do you want to be the Estee Lauder Glamour Girl?

If you’re a Lauder fan already, as I am, you’ll probably be able to answer those questions in your sleep, especially that last one, it’s a no-brainer. Ten finalists will then be announced, and treated to counter experiences in both beauty and fragrance which you will write about. Then Estee Lauder fans will vote for their favourite review, and the winner will be announced on 27 February 2012.

What are you waiting for? Click here to submit your application. This could be your beauty writing break.

5 for Change, fun for charity

24 Jan 2012, Posted by Cape Town Girl in CTG, Parties, cape town, fashion, girl stuff, south africa, weekend in pictures, 0 Comments

We had loads of fun at the 5forchange ball on Saturday. I went with a 3/4 Catherine Moore black dress from Our Wardrobe with gold woven into the fabric with a red vintage clutch, gold earrings and black patent platform peep-toes. Over R30 000 was raised during the auction and while I didn’t win any of the lucky draw prizes I totally ate my ticket’s worth in Lindt Balls through the course of the evening.

Pictured are the guys who threw the party, Ross McKernan, Dave Deetlefs and Adriaan Dippenaar. Well done to them for delivering a seriously good time. It was SO great to have an event to dress up for that wasn’t some form of horseracing event outside in the sun where you melt into your heels which have sunken into the ground. Okay horseraces are fun darling but there’s so much to be said for not being in Kenilworth. And then there’s the part where the money spent is going towards 5 very good causes, namely Let there be light, MyLife, GreenPop, African Brothers Football Association and Write On Africa.

Really enjoyed the performance by I Scream & The Chocolate Stix, it was super charged and the usual good fun. They seem to have a new member in their band… WHO IS DJ MYSTERY GUY IN THE BACK THERE???

Cape Town’s socialites came out en force including the ever-glamourous power blondes Kate White & Lexi Leih (above).

5forChange founder Adriaan Dippenaar with Kate White & James White

5forChange founder Ross McKernan with James White, and a burger.

Posing outside with another of Cape Town’s power blondes, Emma Jackson.

Things got groovy on the dancefloor later, see above.

The lovely Andrea O’ Donnel, Kate White and James White.

Beauties and power brunettes Lauren Marshall and Nicola de Wet.

Good show everyone. Can’t wait for next year!

Thanks to MEJ I discovered this gem of a store called Mr & Mrs on Kloof Street, on the corner next to Buzz Cafe. Their stuff is gorgeous, with clothing from local designers like Christopher Strong & I Love Leroy, to beautiful imported jewellery & decor items. Lots of lovely things from India in here. The owners of the store are off to India this week to source next things that will be in store next month.

2012: the year of (exercise) change

09 Jan 2012, Posted by Cape Town Girl in CTG recommends, exercise, girl stuff, gym jabber, sport, 6 Comments

A gloomy New Year's Day - 2012 is the year of changing up my exercise

I’m a creature of habit. I love being able to run a distance, say 10kms, and then run it over and over and over and over again. I like being able to predict my highs, when my calves will get stiff. I like knowing how awesome I’m going to be feeling at the end of it.  And at the end of it, I like knowing that I’m going to do it all again soon, and then allowing myself to stuff my face because 10kms means I can consumer 700 extra calories (let’s talk prego rolls at AndUnion, or Miss K cupcakes, see below).

nom nom

This enjoyment of doing something over and over isn’t all bad – it’s pretty much how I got myself to run in the first place and to push my distance further and further. The thing is, you do this for 6 months, and your body stops responding (so annoying! but anyway). Running 10kms becomes the serotonin-drenched equivalent of lying on the couch, as far as your body is concerned. Sure it keeps the weight off and it makes you happy and clear-headed, but it doesn’t make things tight and ripply. I have no desire to have a super muscled body-builder’s physique, but I like being able to see a little bit of definition when my body moves. This is what I call tight and ripply.

An average day running on the promenade. Not hard to see why one would want to repeat it.

I’ve recently been convinced by James, the owner of Roark Gyms to change up my exercise program and see what kind of results I’d get. So I threw in some kettle bell, and cut my traditional cardio (running / spinning) from an hour to 30 – 40 minutes. I added some wall balls (throwing and catching a weighted ball against a wall, throwing it out of and catching it in a squat position), and a lot of air squats (squatting with my hands above my head). 15 – 20 minutes of this 3 times a week and I saw a change in my body after three weeks, without changing my diet.

The biggest breakthrough for me this past year is realizing that squatting (with just your hands up or with a weight above your head) is like the Mr Muscle of training movements. It  flattens the tummy, helps make a small waste, contributes to the development of a Beyonce bum and nicely shapes out your thighs. You can make it more hectic by increasing the weight you hold over your head, or running between sets. Of course, creature of habit that I am, I now just want to do squat-based training all day every day, but I will diligently push through this urge and find news ways of pushing my body. More coming soon.

V&A Waterfront invents magical psychic ‘gift finder’ app for the festive season

15 Dec 2011, Posted by Cape Town Girl in CTG recommends, beauty products, cape town, girl stuff, hilarious, lifestyle, 0 Comments

As a blogger, you get quite a lot of promotional giveaways sent your way. Sometimes they are useful, such as that personalized solar-powered alarm clock, which I use every morning to throw at my cat when he starts banging on my head for food. At other times, they are unique, life-changing experiences, like when I got delivered a meal-for-6 voucher by a Robert Mugabe look-alike (thanks Nando’s). Very rarely are they so utterly FREAKING AWESOME as this package of Christmas Gifts the V&A Waterfront delivered to tell me about their festive season gift finder. Please, behold:

Hypnotic Poison by Christian Dior. Only my favourite fragrance ON THIS PLANET. How did they know??? Did their magical gift finder tell them?

And what’s this here? A Chanel double mirror compact. Because touching up your make up in the car / in strange bathrooms that have no mirrors / in a toilet stall after sobbing your eyes out post Blue Valentine is a reality people. Besides, ANY face looks prettier through a Chanel mirror.

And then there’s the Benefit Bathina glimmering body balm. If you’re also a Benefit fan, you’ll know exactly what I mean when I say, “Ya-haa!” Of course, I have already used up half the tin. I have also eaten the candy cane.  What can I say except Thank You Guys. I couldn’t have picked better ones myself, for myself. I will be making use of your gift finder and your easy-to-print-out shopping lists to do my own Christmas shopping, since they clearly work. See how it works: you put in who you’re buying a gift for and it gives you a suggested combination of three gifts. Way better than hedging your bets on one gift, and alleviating that whole ‘perfect gift’ pressure.

Genius. Visit the site here. Follow the V&A Waterfront on Twitter here. And find them on facebook here. There’s loads of exciting Christmas activities happening at the V&A at the moment, like the Summer Concerts, the Wheel of Excellence (is back) and of course the New Year’s Eve concert and fireworks. Sounds like a blast.
