36 Boutiques

Monday Morning. Only way to deal is shopping spree at 36Boutiques, and sharing the spoils with CTG readers.

So thought I’d just ‘check what’s new at 36Boutiques’ this am and ended up adding half the site to my shopping cart. It’s not my fault though, there are such lovely things to be purchased, and it doesn’t require that I leave my bed. ie. this morning’s spree is actually an act of virtue. Here are some of the things I picked out:

Sucker for a one-shoulder and this looks so lovely and comfy. Can’t resist.

Love this – the colour blocking gives a flattering shrug-like effect.

Fitted and just plain LBD goodness.

Been aching for a pair of these nude Melissa wedges for a while now. Next pair will be the nudes with the red strip down the heel – desperately trying to hunt some down.

Delicious Monster pendant reminds me of childhood holidays in Natal.

Love this scarf by Poetry.

Absolutely obsessed with this lioness ring by Oh Dear Megan. Love it!

Okay so that’s the morning’s haul. Now because I am a benevolent blogger, and 36 Boutiques is SA’s premier online shopping destination, if you like any of the items above, you could win your favourite. All you need to do is click this link, sign up to 36 Boutiques and then email me the link to the item you like the most from my Monday Shopping Spree (editor@capetowngirl.com).

Pretty okay for a Monday, yes?

Oh and, today is the last day you get 20% off if you spend R600 or more at 36B. Just a friendly FYI.

Q&A with CTG: What is a Peplum?

24 Mar 2012, Posted by Cape Town Girl in Q&A with CTG, fashion, 0 Comments

So what is this peplum everyone’s talking about? Is it like a polyp? Can you have it removed?

A peplum is like a collar for your waist, and just as useful. It’s like a skirt that never quite gets going. A scrunchie for your waist, if you will. It is also this season’s cry for help, much like last season’s undersize, high-waisted, cutoff denim jeans with the pockets sticking out.

Wow, that’s pretty harsh. Are you inferring that people who wear peplums are fashion victims who have a form of reverse body dysmorphia where they believe they can pull off a trend that exists solely for the benefit of 6-foot string bean super models?

Not exactly, but I do think the peplum is mostly unflattering to wear and extremely unflattering to walk around saying. I mean, peplum? Really? Just by uttering it I feel like I’m oversharing.

Maybe you’re just resistant to change and new things. Maybe you need to broaden your mind by adorning your hips.

Maybe.

While the true red jeans are too much for me, I absolutely love the pastels. Kate’s corals above and the aqua skinnies below are next on my list. Where to buy???

Cara-Lee Gevers & CTG for Heir Magazine

08 Mar 2012, Posted by Cape Town Girl in CTG in the Media, CTG recommends, fashion, interviews, magazines, shoots, south africa, 5 Comments

I was recently shot for HEIR MAGAZINE by up-and-coming photographer Cara-Lee Gevers. You can download the magazine here to read the interview or you can read it online. We had so many amazing shots from this shoot – massive thanks to both Cara-Lee and makeup artist Natasha Papadapoulos , who are magic makers. I’ll be posting some outtakes from the shoot in the next few days. This shimmery mermaid dress, I must just tell you, was made by Cara-Lee Gevers herself. Just that kind of photographer who goes to the ends of the earth to get the shots she wants. And so much fun to work with too. Thank you again ladies and the team at HEIR.

PS the gorgeous grey dress below is Roberto Cavalli and it’s from ourwardrobe.co.za.

Versace darling.

versace sunglass hut cape town girl shades smokey eye

My shades equivalent of the ’smoky eye’. Wear with knee-high suede black boots and skinny jeans. Winter I am coming for you! Picked these up at Sunglass Hut, only place in the country you can get Versace shades.

I actually went in because I wanted the MEDUSA shades – which actually have the Versace Medusa emblem PRINTED ON THE LENS. Behold:

I had this idea of wearing them as I walked through the mall, glaring at anyone thinking ‘what kind of idiot wears their shades in the mall?’ and turning them to stone, just a fantasy I have had since I watched Clash of the Titans around age 8. But it was not to be – the Medusa’s (and any version of an aviator really ) look appalling on me. That’s okay. I love these smoky eyes, even if feel less like an ancient mythical being with malicious super powers than I do an LA soccer mom.

M.A.C Spring / Summer makeup preview at the Old Biscuit Mill

Managed to swing by the new seasonal MAC makeup preview last week. These are obviously international trends so not terribly relevant as we go into autumn and winter, but it was informative no less. There are four key looks, Ath-Elite (which is sporty and striking and pictured above and below), Nouv-Eau which is like a romantic revival, Ore-Inspired (lots of metallics and oranges) and Neo-N (very bright).

Ore-inspired.

I’m a big MAC makeup fan. It’s always been the choice of makeup artists that have worked on me, and they have always made me look super awesome with it. It is, however, the kind of makeup you need to be taught how to use. I have had a few misadventures.

To me, MAC is the makeup equivalent of the triple-fold-out coki sets you used to get as a kid. Or the full range of Dala Acrylics. And it’s much like art in practise. You need to understand colour and form. You know how one of the first lessons you get in painting is that you should never use black on your canvas, because black is actually a combination of a million different colours and pot black can be too harsh and weird? It’s that vibe. Which means makeup artistry requires an eye, and confidence in your brushstrokes. God bless makeup artists.

I mean, you might have been here too, where you see a look in the magazine, and the girl has this amazing blue eyeshadow on and almost no foundation and it just looks so awesome you think I AM GOING TO TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT so off you go to MAC and you buy the blue and you put it on your eyes but instead of looking like a glamourous creature of the night you look like something that’s been attacked by a creature in the night and lo and behold it’s because the model’s blue eyeshadow was actually made up of pink and yellow and purple and some kind of contouring foundation that somehow makes the blue, and that magic Mac charged water they sprinkle on your face for dewy skin. You need a little guidance, especially if you’re not a trained makeup artist, so coming to an event like this and seeing the artists get creative and how they create certain looks was pretty interesting.

Thanks to MAC for the invitation.

Terrible pic but I love this dress – it’s by SA designers Good Clothing and I got it from Coco Li at the New Cape Quarter.

Excuse the self portraits, better shots of this dress coming as we used it in a shoot. Absolutely love this Dolce & Gabbana number, from ourwardrobe.co.za

This is a pic of a pic off a computer from aforementioned shoot. The dress is Roberto Cavalli and it’s a piece of draped heaven. Also from ourwardrobe.co.za

And it looks pretty awesome. See the collection here. (Source NBC news)

If I were to design a collection it would probably involve animal print, goddess dresses, one-shoulder numbers, harem pants and tailored hour-glass minis. Lots of greys and silvers and nudes and whites. Some dark blues, some grey blues. And black, of course. One can dream…
