Attention aspiring fashionistas. I spent Saturday afternoon at the Elizabeth Galloway Academy of Fashion Design (like SA’s version of Central St Martins) where we were taught how to make a summer bag. I had lovely (and very very patient ) miss Mieke helping me because it’s a lot harder than it looks this whole ‘creating fashion from scratch’ thing.
I made most of the rookie errors – going so fast my thread came out the machine, skew stiching that had to be unpicked, messy pinning, reckless overlocking – you name it, I messed it up. But somehow the pile of fabric materialised into a gorgeous summer bag in the end, which I’ll definitely be using on the beach! Below: the ‘before’ picture – believe it or not this will become a handbag
A whole lot of this before anything becomes real. That navy ribbon is vintage, by the way ;)
Some more finishings and embellishments
And then voila! We have ourselves a gorgeous beach bag. Country WHO???? ;)
If this looks like the sort of thing you’d enjoy doing full time, you should look into doing one of their courses. They do Part Time Short Courses as well as a full Diploma in Fashion Design that takes 3 years. And if you don’t really want to become a designer but would rather work in and around the field of fashion, then this is the place to come – they teach you all about the adjacent industries too (buying, styling, fashion writing, business). A big thanks to Derek and the lovely ladies for all your help and for a lovely afternoon out in Stellenbosch. Click here to go to the Elizabeth Galloway website.
If you’ve ever been to the Cape Quarter you have probably come across Daniela’s, a delightful little confectioner next door to Dillon&Jada, where I like to get my Vivienne Westwood Melissa shoes. This weekend I had the privilege of tasting the CTG-inspired macaroon(blogged about here), hand-delivered by Daniela’s Durban partner Lexi, owner of Durban Central blog.
The CTG-inspired macaroon is Champagne-infused vanilla, and it is like nothing on earth. It has all that creamy deliciousness of vanilla, with a tart, almost creme-brulee-cheesecake type finish. And truly, it has to be the most delicious macaron flavour I have ever tasted. Its appearance is that of a gold-dusted vanilla macaroon (see below).
Daniela’s in the Cape Quarter have a limited stock of the CTG macaroon, so you should go and taste one while you can. Or ten. It’s not hard to get carried away!
Pictured is a very thrilled CTG with her box of golden macarons. Can I also just take a moment here to appreciate Daniela’s packaging?! Presentation is everything, and Daniela’s treats are as well turned out as those from world famous Laduree in Paris.Simply beautiful!

I missed this because of an iCal disaster, but no matter, now I can go and drool over Missibaba bags in my own time since the studio shop is open for business. You’ll find it here. I have been going through the photos and it looked like an amazing evening filled with macarons and leather handbags. For those of you who don’t knowMissibaba, it’s the original Cape Town designer leather handbaglabel. Each one is handmade and customised in its detail for the wearer. Owning one is a ‘rite of passage’ for CT Girls. Check out the pics from the launch here.
Bought this on Saturday. It’s currently got “Best Dress” status in my wardrobe. I love it. You can’t really see in the pic, but the colours are actually quite saturated and bright, and there are hand-painted gold accents on the spots. From Arendz’ Du Sud store in Cape Quarter.
Been considering this zebra wall tattoo. For Casa CTG. Perhaps you have noticed my blog sports a zebra background tattoo. Am going for a theme here, despite the fact that the zebra print was inspired by The Blogging Gown worn in this video, which is actually white tiger print (I know, so complicated). It’s been a journey to the zebra, basically. Anyway there’s a great deal on dealio this week where you can get 50% off the usual price of wall tattoos and pay only R175. I just can’t say no ( on the site it says the deal has tipped so it means if you buy, the discount is a sure thing, FYI). I like wall tattoos because they are more graphic than art, and depending on how you use them, they can totally change a space, see below.
I’m calling this “A small step for a bloggers, a giant leap for brand kind”.
Rokk Vodka have appointed the LEGENDS behind “I’m on a boat” as the Creative Directors of their new ad. Of course, it is hilarious. Please enjoy. An excerpt:
“I had a wonderful dream of a place where luxury, status, desire, a Viking, and a vodka transcends space and time to a moment soon forgotten.”
AM / PM are pretty exceptional, too. They are not available for sale publicly at the moment but you can email the designer, Daniel Ting Chong, and he’ll make you up a custom set. Hit him up at dtingchong@gmail.com. It’s also worth checking out his site – he makes some very pretty things. We approve.
Soooooo bummed y’alls. Wanted to put this in my guest bathroom. Had my eye on it for a while. Even bought matching black & white fluffy covers for my marble loo. And then BAM, someone snapped it up for$35 million. Guess that’s ‘just the way art goes’. Dear Andy Warhol, wish. you. were. here. 35 million. Damn.
