jonathan franzen cape town girl book review

I read ‘Freedom’ by Jonathan Franzen and loved it. So much insight into everything he writes about, from messed up family dynamics to overpopulation. And it got me thinking about overpopulation and how there really are just way too many people in this world for all of us to happily get by, which I’m sure is entirely his aim. Now you’re thinking about it too. See how this works?

Cub has taken to balancing precariously on his rail. Sometimes we find him after he has fallen and is clutching the sides, his legs all stiff like a baby gorilla. It’s obnoxiously cute, much like everything else about it.

Terrible pic but I love this dress – it’s by SA designers Good Clothing and I got it from Coco Li at the New Cape Quarter.

Excuse the self portraits, better shots of this dress coming as we used it in a shoot. Absolutely love this Dolce & Gabbana number, from ourwardrobe.co.za

This is a pic of a pic off a computer from aforementioned shoot. The dress is Roberto Cavalli and it’s a piece of draped heaven. Also from ourwardrobe.co.za

5 for Change, fun for charity

We had loads of fun at the 5forchange ball on Saturday. I went with a 3/4 Catherine Moore black dress from Our Wardrobe with gold woven into the fabric with a red vintage clutch, gold earrings and black patent platform peep-toes. Over R30 000 was raised during the auction and while I didn’t win any of the lucky draw prizes I totally ate my ticket’s worth in Lindt Balls through the course of the evening.

Pictured are the guys who threw the party, Ross McKernan, Dave Deetlefs and Adriaan Dippenaar. Well done to them for delivering a seriously good time. It was SO great to have an event to dress up for that wasn’t some form of horseracing event outside in the sun where you melt into your heels which have sunken into the ground. Okay horseraces are fun darling but there’s so much to be said for not being in Kenilworth. And then there’s the part where the money spent is going towards 5 very good causes, namely Let there be light, MyLife, GreenPop, African Brothers Football Association and Write On Africa.

Really enjoyed the performance by I Scream & The Chocolate Stix, it was super charged and the usual good fun. They seem to have a new member in their band… WHO IS DJ MYSTERY GUY IN THE BACK THERE???

Cape Town’s socialites came out en force including the ever-glamourous power blondes Kate White & Lexi Leih (above).

5forChange founder Adriaan Dippenaar with Kate White & James White

5forChange founder Ross McKernan with James White, and a burger.

Posing outside with another of Cape Town’s power blondes, Emma Jackson.

Things got groovy on the dancefloor later, see above.

The lovely Andrea O’ Donnel, Kate White and James White.

Beauties and power brunettes Lauren Marshall and Nicola de Wet.

Good show everyone. Can’t wait for next year!

Tech Report Interview

05 Dec 2011, Posted by Cape Town Girl in CTG, CTG in the Media, interviews, south africa, technology, tv, 0 Comments

Chatted to Ndoni from eTV’s Tech Report on Monday morning about online shopping in South Africa, what companies are doing well, what they could be doing better. I always think after every TV interview that I’ve just babbled on and on and not made any sense. This interview was no different but the crew were super fun, and thanks to them for having me.

An aside: TV is awesome because they do your makeup all stagey and make your hair all pretty and you get so glammed up, but it’s for like fifteen minutes of filming. If you’re like me you think it’s a shame to wipe all this hard work off, so you go to lunch looking like a transvestite that hasn’t been home yet. Good times.

Think the segment will be screened next Thursday. Follow @TechReportSA on twitter for more.

Discovery Health Walking Clinic

Had a great day chatting health benefits with Craig from Discovery Health (top right) and some other media folk as a warm-up to our Big Walk on Sunday. We talked about what makes being healthy hard, and it’s not just the mere existence of McDonald’s (or in my case, macarons). It’s also misleading food packaging, about how we don’t know what acceptable levels of salt, sugar and fat is. We also talked about how it can be hard for some people to stay motivated when it comes to exercise. That’s one thing Discovery are great at – I am personally obsessed with earning Vitality points and will take any opportunity to do so. Blood tests, going to gym and, of course, the Big Walk which I’m doing on Sunday with Discovery (4 000 Vitality points! Wheeeeeeee!).

See you at the Big Walk on Sunday! (I’ll be the girl in the Discovery cap and the Bulgari Shades from Sunglass Hut ;)

I hate my body. But it’s not my fault.

25 Oct 2011, Posted by Cape Town Girl in CTG, WTF, exercise, girl stuff, gym jabber, magazines, 12 Comments

I hate my body, but it’s not my fault.

It’s the MAGAZINES’ fault, cos they publish pictures of thin people.

It’s HOLLYWOOD’s fault, because they choose to depict an aspirational lifestyle.

It’s FASHION’s fault, because they make clothes I can’t fit into.

I’m going to tweet about it angrily, right after I tweet about how hungover I am from last night’s wine and food tasting, where I ate seven courses excluding dessert, drank a bottle and half of wine, drank 3 shooters and smoked half a pack of cigarettes.

I’m sick of having to hate my body because of the media.

Enough is enough.

I hate my body, but it’s not my fault.

It’s the ADVERTISER’S FAULT, and it’s THE GYM’S fault, for only showing pictures of slim healthy people, even though it logically makes sense because they are trying to talk to people who value being slim and healthy.

They make me feel fat and disgusting.

So do those skinny bitches who tweet about ‘how much they love running’.

I hate running and I hate anything to do with exercise.

I especially hate people who talk about it.

I hope you drown in your own sweat or get strangled by your monokini and stop making me feel like shit because I can walk up a flight of stairs without breaking a sweat.

The problem isn’t THAT I DON’T EXERCISE.

The problem is that SO MANY  OF THOSE AWFUL SKINNY PEOPLE DO, AND I HATE THEM.

I hate my body, but it’s not my fault.

It’s KFC’s fault for serving such TEMPTING DELICIOUS FOODS.

And it’s VEGETABLES’ fault for being so not-filled with salt and addictive flavourants and fried in fat.

It’s those adverts for WEIGHT LOSS AIDS’ fault.

Why should companies make money out of HELPING PEOPLE BE HEALTHIER? BASTARDS.

Why should I EAT LESS? The media is FILLED with things telling me to eat less.

Well I’ll show the media I have my own mind by EATING MORE.

Take that media!

And when I’m done eating more than is healthy for my height and size, I am going to slag the media off for making me feel so shit about my body.

I hate my body, but it’s not my fault.

Sure, I smoke, but if you’re gonna lecture me about how ‘bad smoking is for your lungs and overall body functioning’ then PUH LEEEEEEZE get out of here you self-righteous new age ponce.

Smoking is my THING, okay? So is drinking. And eating.

So what if instead of dealing with issues in my life I prefer to EAT UNTIL I’M IN A CARB COMA.

And SO WHAT if my big nights out make me feel like a rat that got run over on Long Street.

SO WHAT if two bottles of wine, five shooters and 4 cocktails contains more than three times the average adult human’s daily calorie allowance. I LIKE TO HAVE FUN OKAY.

It’s not MY DRINKING that’s the problem.

It’s magazines showing slim people looking happy that’s the problem.

My need to ABUSE THE MIRACLE OF NATURE THAT IS MY BODY is NOT why I feel filled with loathing every time I look in the mirror.

The fact that I wheeze every time I need to slightly exert myself is NOT why I hate my body.

I hate my body because of THE MEDIA AND THEIR CONSTANT REMINDER OF HOW GOOD HEALTH CAN LOOK.

They should be BANNED for showing slim people and an aspirational lifestyle. People who are good examples make me feel LIKE SHIT.

I hate my body, but it’s not my fault.

It’s EVERYBODY’S fault but my own.

what weekends are for

24 Oct 2011, Posted by Cape Town Girl in CTG, weekends, 2 Comments

Miss @frangipanies and her baby Bo

- Staying off twitter

- Getting out of town

- Snuggling with puppies (like Fran & Bo above)

- Making plans for the future

- Drinking tea in bed (an old favourite, newly rediscovered)

- Pushing your body at a new form of exercise (this weekend I went for it on the spinning bike. Stiff legs, but in a refreshing new way)

- reading a good book really slowly (as opposed to getting in as much as you can without eating into the seven hour sleep budget)

Ah…

waxing Loerical

19 Sep 2011, Posted by Cape Town Girl in CTG, Celebrity, Parties, advertising, cape town, hilarious, south africa, 0 Comments

At the @marieclaire_sa @Loeries winner's party with @MissEmmaJude. Cos we're winners!

That’s me and MEJ at the Loerie Awards Marie Claire Winner’s after party at Reserve. What is the Loerie Awards, you ask? It’s when a whole bunch of people who spend all year surfing youtube and tweeting about their hangovers get together to drink a lot and clap hands for work made by other youtube-surfers and then tweet about their hangovers. Don’t let that detract from the prestigious nature of this event – it is ‘Africa’s premiere advertising awards show’ after all. And it was good fun. First night was hosted by Riaan Cruywagen, the newsguy who’s been around forever.

Just ironically worshipping Riaan Cruywagen along with the rest of the ad industry, you?

Oh hey dere Loeries, love @paigen @karinbmac & CTG

It's @DavidHasselhoff opening the @Loeries in the sparkliest jacket I ever saw

And last night was hosted by The Hoff. As in David Hasselfhoff himself. Yes.. he arrived on stage in a sparkly jacket singing along to the Baywatch theme (don’t you worry… it’s gonna be alright..) and proceeded to crack a lot of Hoff jokes. He also referred to himself as ‘the ultimate integrated campaign’… fair enough. He also made a lot of jokes about sleeping with a lot of women, which always makes a man look like he wants to you think he’s slept with a lot of women, which makes him a) a bit ew (promiscuity is so 70s) and b) appear a little insecure. No matter! He made up for it by bursting into a rousing rendition of Hooked On A Feeling while he walked down the CTICC auditorium, carrying a baywatch lifebuoy, with seven strippers in catsuits gyrating around him.

You haven't lived until you've watched @DavidHasselhoff singing Hooked On A Feeling live, carrying a lifebuoy

All in all, it was good fun. Oh, and some people won some awards. Read more here.
