new running shoes: Reebok Realflex

02 Apr 2012, Posted by Cape Town Girl in CTG recommends, exercise, shoes, sport, the run diaries, 0 Comments

I’ve been doing a lot of research on finding a good minimalist style running shoe ever since reading Born To Run. Born To Run is a phenomenal book written by Christopher McDougall that you should read if you want to start running, or you already enjoy it. It’s about his studies into the running style of a remote Mexican tribe called the Tarahumara who seem to have superhuman running abilities (you should seriously watch this video to see how awesome they are).

I’d love the benefits of barefoot running. You get less injuries, you run more efficiently, you develop a proper running style, you have longer distance abilities and you become a superhuman immortal and all that, but in reality I have about an hour to run vs four days, wear heels three days a week, don’t always get enough sleep, have to run in and around the city most of the time and the misty fantasy of running barefoot through the forest like some kind of fitness goddess isn’t looking like much of a reality for me. Also I would like to point out that there are scorpions and snakes on the mountain.

beauty products (and some shoes) I am enjoying at present

Just a few things making my life a little bit better at the moment:

I’ve gone through about 4 tubes of this this summer. Let’s get real – no cream can get rid of cellulite without you pulling your weight in the watching-your-diet, cardio and resistance departments, but I do think this helps with whatever’s left after that. This is a lightweight GEL and instantly absorbed, and has this cooling sensation, which I love after a hot shower following a hard workout.

Restaurant Review: Dinner at Bungalow with MissEmmaJude

02 Apr 2012, Posted by Cape Town Girl in CTG recommends, food, restaurants, south africa, 0 Comments

Went for dinner at Bungalow last night, it was my second time there. Absolutely great food, as I experienced last time (I had the fillet and the mussels – both excellent). The tagliata with balsamic cream sauce was soft and succulent and utterly delish. Thrilled to add another tagliata destination to my list after La Perla. I also had the oysters with vodka and sweet melon salsa to start. Not the biggest, most delicious oysters I have encountered in my life (those I found at Kyoto Garden last week) but not terrible either.

Monday Morning. Only way to deal is shopping spree at 36Boutiques, and sharing the spoils with CTG readers.

26 Mar 2012, Posted by Cape Town Girl in CTG recommends, competitions, fashion, shopping, south africa, 0 Comments

So thought I’d just ‘check what’s new at 36Boutiques’ this am and ended up adding half the site to my shopping cart. It’s not my fault though, there are such lovely things to be purchased, and it doesn’t require that I leave my bed. ie. this morning’s spree is actually an act of virtue. Here are some of the things I picked out:

Sucker for a one-shoulder and this looks so lovely and comfy. Can’t resist.

Love this – the colour blocking gives a flattering shrug-like effect.

Fitted and just plain LBD goodness.

Been aching for a pair of these nude Melissa wedges for a while now. Next pair will be the nudes with the red strip down the heel – desperately trying to hunt some down.

Delicious Monster pendant reminds me of childhood holidays in Natal.

Love this scarf by Poetry.

Absolutely obsessed with this lioness ring by Oh Dear Megan. Love it!

Okay so that’s the morning’s haul. Now because I am a benevolent blogger, and 36 Boutiques is SA’s premier online shopping destination, if you like any of the items above, you could win your favourite. All you need to do is click this link, sign up to 36 Boutiques and then email me the link to the item you like the most from my Monday Shopping Spree (editor@capetowngirl.com).

Pretty okay for a Monday, yes?

Oh and, today is the last day you get 20% off if you spend R600 or more at 36B. Just a friendly FYI.

Girls lunch at Uitsig

Ventured out of the city and into the winelands with MEJ & LA yesterday for a lazy, early autumn lunch at Uitsig. Ever the carnivores we ordered the fillet and were not even slightly disappointed. A glass of Graham Beck Brut rose went down just beautifully before a lazy walk around the estate in the sunshine. Cape Town is perfect this time of year – how I wish autumn would last forever.

Fitness Diaries: Working out what it means to work out.

Shot by Annie Liebowitz for Nike's 'Make Yourself' Campaign

I blogged earlier this year that this was my year of exercise change, growth and discovery. Since exercise and staying fit is something I will do for the rest of my life, I need to ensure that I stay interested in it long-term, and training under the guidance of Roark Gyms has opened up a whole new world to me. My fitness life is now divided between 2 eras: BRG (Before Roark Gyms) and ARG (After Roark Gyms).

Before Roark Gyms, I had certain ideas about how this whole fitness thing worked, namely:

You can’t change your body shape, you can only work with what you’ve got.

Cardio is running, cycling, swimming, dancing, etc.

You have to do cardio to burn calories and keep excess weight off and push your heart rate up regularly with cardio to stay fit and get fitter.

Strength training will make you big, and doesn’t really work anyway (this is true – especially the kind of strength training encouraged at most commercial gyms).

Strength training is using machines at the gym like the super circuit, the yes-no machines, the stomach machine, the bicep curler, etc etc.

You should rest when you’re stiff because you’ve worked too hard and need to recover.

I now know a whole lot more since training under the guidance of Roark Gyms, namely that you only see results when you’re using the movements the body is designed to do, and when you consistently challenge and surprise your body.

Cara-Lee Gevers & CTG for Heir Magazine

08 Mar 2012, Posted by Cape Town Girl in CTG in the Media, CTG recommends, fashion, interviews, magazines, shoots, south africa, 5 Comments

I was recently shot for HEIR MAGAZINE by up-and-coming photographer Cara-Lee Gevers. You can download the magazine here to read the interview or you can read it online. We had so many amazing shots from this shoot – massive thanks to both Cara-Lee and makeup artist Natasha Papadapoulos , who are magic makers. I’ll be posting some outtakes from the shoot in the next few days. This shimmery mermaid dress, I must just tell you, was made by Cara-Lee Gevers herself. Just that kind of photographer who goes to the ends of the earth to get the shots she wants. And so much fun to work with too. Thank you again ladies and the team at HEIR.

PS the gorgeous grey dress below is Roberto Cavalli and it’s from ourwardrobe.co.za.
