Nike Air Jordan goes girlpower

28 Sep 2010, Posted by Cape Town Girl in Celebrity, Design, fashion, girl stuff, 0 Comments

Va$htie

You’re looking at the first woman to ever design a pair of Nike Air Jordan’s. Her name is Va$htie Kola (ye$ I know okay) and she made history by designing the Ladies Air Jordan 2 Retro. It’s a cool shoe – we like the lavender, purple and silver. We’d wear them to band practise. And maybe to next year’s blog awards, with a pouffy dress. Wonder if they’ll be available in SA?

Vashtie is quite a cool chick. She’s worked for Def Jam Records and she even has her own fashion label (called Violette) described as “if Louis Vuitton had a daughter living in the Lower East Side. She’d be rocking a cool t-shirt, kicks, and a great handbag”. She also dated Pharrel Williams for 5 years. And now you know.

WANT: the Steve McQueen Persol fold-ups

Steve McQueen

Guys and Girls – these are the summer shades to have. They are total classics and I see they’ve just been relaunched. Oh the lust. Steve McQueen is a legend. Did you know that he was offered the lead role in Breakfast At Tiffany’s, except he declined it due to filming Wanted: Dead Or Alive? He was also Steven Spielberg’s first choice for Close Encounters Of The Third Kind but he didn’t take the role because he said he couldn’t cry on cue. He was also super into his cars, and owned a Porsche 917, Porsche 908, Ferrari 512, 1963 Ferrari 250 Lusso Berlinetta, Jaguar D-Type XKSS and a Porsche 356 Speedster – to name a few. Basically, Steve McQueen did not drive a tazz. More detail on the shades:

classics!

When BH 90120 first came out, I wasn’t really allowed to watch it. This Rolling Stone cover came out in 1992, which would have made me… 9 years old. But I watched it anyway. I used to hide behind the potplants at the entrance to our lounge after my parents had sent me to bed (no jokes). The BH kids always seemed so glam compared by my little life on the prairie in Worcester. Kidding, didn’t grow up in Worcester. I grew up on the slopes of Clifton 2nd, which is a bit like Worcester (in that you have to get into a car to find macarons, completely unlike Gardens).

Anyway, I have much loyalty to 90120, and my heart welled with warmth when Pepe Jeans sent me all this old footage of Jason Priestley talking about acting and life and art, obviously a part of an advertising campaign they were doing at the time. I was actually way more into bad boy Dylan (on the left on Rolling Stone cover) rather than Jason’s character Brandon, but I was 9 and foolish and have subsequently learnt that nice guys make the best boyfriends and that bad guys who seem really exciting because they stay single forever actually stay single forever because they don’t really know what to do with women. So have graduated onto Jason. There is something so James Dean about all this footage – love it! Click here to watch it for a nostalgic rush – you won’t be able to fight it.

Some interestings facts about Jason Priestley:

- he was born in Canada (land of the Beaver!)

- he has a twin sister called Justine

- he dated Shannon Doherty (uh, duh)

- he drives race cars and often commentates on ABC’s indiecar racing

And now you know.

CTG now dressed by Pepe Jeans

Very excited to announce that CTG is now dressed by Pepe Jeans, who are back in SA (you can get them at any Stuttafords or Edgars). Very exciting to be working with Pepe! It’s in a whole brand league of its own. Kate Moss’s first campaign ever was for Pepe Jeans (miss you 90s)

and The Smiths did a campaign for Pepe Jeans back in the day…

“Take me out tonight
Where there’s music and there’s people
And they’re young and alive
Driving in your car
I never never want to go home
Because I haven’t got one
Anymore”

- There Is A Light That Never Goes Out

The Smiths. The stuff of legends.

Natalia Vodianova has also modelled for the brand

as have Sienna Miller and Laetitia Casta. The current Pepe campaign features Alexa Chung – a CTG favourite – she of the impossibly skinny legs and the ‘full ombre’ (dark roots, blonde tips)

Pepe Jeans remind me of holidays on the French Riviera, of listening to Vanessa Paradis and Carla Bruni, of Ray Ban Clubmasters …

Clubmasters - it's not summer without them - got these from Sunglass Hut

writing moody lyrics in coffee shops and photo shoots in sunny studios. Got a sample selection of the Pepe Summer Range this weekend to sort out sizes, and I’ve already fallen in love with some classic pieces…

Jacket

Gorgeous Denim Jacket - is actually a very light denim, will do a better shoot soon.

One-shoulder dress by Pepe Jeans

Love this one-shoulder chiffon dress! Instant CTG fav. Also like how it looks in the messy bedroom, like I roll around in bed in dresses like this all day.

TigerLily Shrug Cardigan by Pepe Jeans

This oversize shrug-cardigan - called the TigerLily - is going to be one of my live-ins for summer, fact.

"Twiggy" Skinnies - LOVE

The 'Twiggy' skinnies - love the colour on these. They also have sparkle detail that is super subtle. And the cut is great too. Love!

LOTS more to come, just took these shots very quickly while on my way to record the second part of our track (it’s coming along very nicely…). Needless to say I can’t wait for summer – there’s nothing like a new summer wardrobe to make you get over winter very quickly.

watched the A-team. Not sure what it was about.

Watched the A-team last night. Here’s what I know for sure:

1. That black dude with PITY and FOOL tattooed on his knuckles was quite cool, but a bit emo. I don’t like my cool big black dudes to be emo. Did anyone else find him emo? Like that vibe where he gets freed and then he trims his hair and there’s this deep moment where we see he hasn’t given himself a mohawk again? He’s just given himself a normal trim? Like, tragedy! I’m not sure that scene actually happened since I did drift in and out of sleep. But that was the vibe.. and it was emo..

2. Sharlto Copley was really funny. Especially when he sang ‘You spin me right round baby right round’ while clinging to the helicopter blades. Also loved all his crazy faces. He was a great crazy guy. You just look at him and you laugh. And then when he’s not on screen you think, what is going on in this movie? Who are these people? Why do they keep saying something about a plan coming together?

3. Bradley Cooper is HOT. More please.

Guys that movie was really confusing. I know it was meant to touch me somewhere deep, to evoke some kind of nostalgia, or something, but I also realised while watching it that even though I THOUGHT I’d watched A-team when I was younger, I clearly hadn’t because I didn’t know who anyone was or what was going on.

Anybody else seen A-team? Anyone else have that kind of revelation? Anybody else feel confused? Going to have to watch Inception just to feel a little less confused.

Guys, we all remember this wonderful video where SA comedian Don Packett pretends to be the Head Parlotone and swings around his chicken leg. Well you can catch him and Jon Vlismas – who is also hilarious – at the Breadline Africa comedy show at the Grand Daddy Hotel on 2 September 2010. It’s being hosted by ridiculously good-looking Richard Hardiman, whom you listen to every morning on 2oceansvibe radio, no doubt.

(Hey does ANYONE listen to ‘old radio’ anymore? Like over the airwaves’? Gosh, that’s right up there with ‘dialup modems’, yes? Hey remember when you actually had to ‘fiddle with a knob’ so you could ‘get a signal’? Mindblowing!)

Anyway Breadline for Africa is a charity that is close to CTG’s heart, and hilarity aside, the funds raised from this will go to sending 120 underprivileged kids to the Breadline For Africa Annual Seaside Party. This gets held every year and they take kids who have never seen the sea, to go sea the sea. Which is a very meaningful initiative. Please just imagine never having seen the sea?

Llandudno beach right here right now

The sea. You've never seen it.

Camps Bay right now

And this. You've never seen this either.

Ja, I thought so. Get yourself a ticket for R250 by clicking here. See you there! xx

LA, PD and CTG

Went to the launch of 2oceansvibe radio on Wednesday night – you’ve never seen the New Cape Quarter so packed. It was an awesome evening – Jack Parow played live! Which rocked! Lots of good wine and pretty people. But the best part is the fact that we don’t have to listen to mass market radio anymore! Thank DOG. Because I’m NOT mass market. I’m CTG.

Click here to check out the pics from the launch.

Click here to check out 2oceansvibe radio site.

Click here to stream 2oceansvibe radio live. You can actually stream it on your phone! It totally works real time – perfectly! Ja, radio really is obsolete isn’t it… miss u AM / FM. Kinda. Not. Have thoroughly enjoyed the first 2 days of 2OV radio - Richard Hardiman and Seth are doing a great job. Don’t you think they’re really funny to listen to? Especially since they’re talking about things that are actually relevant to CTG’s interests – completely unlike ‘normal radio’. Plus I find myself actually liking ALL the music. And even the ads! Hehe. Tune in and enjoy.
