Introducing a new regular feature of CTG. Meet Josie Cat: she belongs to MissEmmaJude, who writes the blog Lotsofdifferentstuff. Emma is hilarious. Please enjoy the following exchange, which happened on one of my facebook statuses:

"If I don't eat this smoked salmon, I will go insane!"

Genius. Anyway Emma has a very cute l’il kitty, whom I have gotten to know intimately over facebook, where Emma posts at least 3 new pictures of Josie Cat a day. Now I will be picking the best of them to bring them to you right here at CTG, so you can also keep up with the Life and Times of Josie Cat! Awesome! Also, LTJC will also be featuring Guest Cats, so if you would like to share your cat and its adventures with us here at CTG, just drop me a mail with your pic and caption to editor@capetowngirl.com.

Audi MVP Day: Riding in cars with girls

29 Mar 2010, Posted by Cape Town Girl in Design, bloggers, cape town, cars, lifestyle, technology, 6 Comments

Picture it. A misty Friday. 10 guys and girls are brought together to drive 4 cars: The Audi Q5, The Audi A5 Sportback Petrol, the Audi A5 Sportback Diesel, and the cheeky l’il A3. And boy did we drive! First up 4 of us girls piled into the Q5 and headed off the in the direction of Somerset West. The Q5 ignited the lust for a performance car – at 150km/hr on the freeway there wasn’t so much as a vibration on the wheel. It killed!

The beastly beauty of the Q5

At the Firlands Shell we hopped out and claimed the A5 petrol. Our man from Audi got in with us and showed us how to really make the car work with you - accelerating into the corners and all that. I thought the Q5 was my new vehicle goal, but getting in the A5 has changed how I approach driving. The A5 Sportback, my friends, is the iPhone of cars! It’s unbelievable! I’ve always appreciated cars, but I now understand the geeky obsession surrounding performance cars. If you know what you’re doing, you can basically customise it’s performance to suit your mood. Lifechanging.

The A5 Sportback Diesel engine - 'the iPhone of cars'

Suits me, yes?

There is a notable difference in power in the petrol and the diesel A5s. The Diesel takes off like a rocket-launcher! It’s an addictive feeling, knowing you can move as quickly as you could possibly ever need to move on the roads. We made the most of this on the coastal road to Gordon’s Bay.

Within a matter of minuted we were suddenly in Betties Bay, having coffee at the Whale Cottage Cafe, reflecting on the morning’s thrills.

And then it was back in the A5s! We opened the sunroof and Nikki took the driving seat and worked the beasts on the coast road back to town.

The coast road

Then we were treated to a fabulous lunch at the Cape Grace as Audi gave us a chance to ask questions about the cars we’d just learnt to drive. We all got some funky caps too!

What a day! Nothing like having a new car to lust over! It’s like having a purpose in life, such as wanting a house and two kids, only less unrealistic and with more reward (heh..kidding… kinda of). Have any of you experienced the joy that is driving the A5? Were you guys able to ‘go back to real life’ afterwards? I’ll admit, I’m struggling. Big thanks to Audi and Chris Rawlinson, who make the MVP Days happen. Try and get yourself on the list for an MVP day – things will never be the same again! Spa Saturdays: One&Only Cape Town

One&Only Cape Town

By the time you read this, it’ll be monday morning. I’m going to get the week off to a good start by taking us on a trip back in time to Saturday, a day that stood out for being particularly awesome. It began with a 10am appointment for the Unwind Signature Treatment, at the One&Only Hotel. I pulled into the hotel’s drive, handed my car to a smiling, charming valet. As soon as I set eyes upon his dapper leopard-print waistcoat, I knew this was going to be good.

One&Only Cape Town - view from the Spa Island

I was shown to a dimly lit dressing room, where I disrobed into a luxurious O&O gown, made of a soft suede-like fabric which was lined with thick towelling. I eased into the fragrant waters of the vitality pool, where I let my muscles soak for a while so they’d be more receptive to massage.

My therapist, the lovely T, took me through the Unwind Signature Treatment, which included a full body scrub, a hot stone treatment, a full-body massage and a scalp massage. She rubbed two different kinds of oils on my hands and asked me to smell them. She said my body would tell me which one it needs. The first smelt good – patchouli and sandalwood. The second one opened up my lungs and filled my body with white light. “I’ll go with that one,” I said. T informed me that this oil contained frankincense and myrrh (how lovely!), “known to put you to sleep”. That sounded fantastic!

The Vitality Pool. You float on those beds while bubbles massage you from underneath.

Things got off to a good start with the scrub, which was rubbed on with warm oil and rubbed off with warm mitts - that feels as good as it sounds. T then alternated between a deep tissue massage and the hot stone massage. A bowl filled with warm water and fragrant essences was placed beneath the massage table so i could inhale it, and T worked warm, smooth volcanic basalt rocks into my muscles, all stiff from running the day before, stiffness dissolving into little sprinkly stars of happiness.

View from the mainland.

Then came the scalp massage, which was a soothing mud masque that cooled the scalp. My neck was stretched out and ‘reconfigured’ if you like – while T’s fingers worked magic on my temples, and all over my head. I was then turned onto my back, and all of the above was repeated on my top half. By the end of it, I was in a relaxation-induced coma, so I sipped on Pomegranate juice while I relaxed on one of the loungers in the relaxing room and eased myself back into the real world. I then spent a further hour in and out of the steam room, the vitality pool and the sauna. Because why on earth would I not?

Post treatment glow!

I am exaggerating only slightly when I say that I felt like a had been ‘born anew’ after this treatment. I have tried to describe it very richly so you too can feel ‘born anew’ too. So you can feel like we did this together. Sincerely hope this has helped you ease into Monday. If not, book yourself an Unwind Signature Treatment at One&Only Cape Town here. You can also be all old school with a telephone and call + 27 21 431 5888.

Steenberg Wine Tasting

24 Mar 2010, Posted by Cape Town Girl in cape town, lifestyle, wine, 6 Comments

An evening filled with hilarity, great wine and delicious food. CTG’s Wine Expert Harry completely took control of the situation and ran it like a total pro, arriving with his charcuterie and his selection of fine cheeses (a brie, a camembert and a landana), slicing up the baguette and sourdough and toasting it into crostini, frying up the spicy chorizo and wrapping it all in succulent parma ham. We decided to veer slightly from the menu Steenberg provided us with because one of our guests is allergic to shellfish, but we did well with what we had. The Catarina and the cheeses were without doubt my favourite part of the evening, though I did also enjoy the Sauvignon Blanc which we served with some fresh greens, rosa tomatoes, a touch of balsamic vinegar, olive oil, cracked black pepper and sea salt.

Some twitter highlights from the evening include:

I honestly enjoyed the evening immensely, especially having Harry around to educate us on the finer points of the wines. My tasting background is a whisky one, so I found the Steenberg Flagship wines to be a treat, especially after we left them to breathe a little and came back to them later, especially the Semillon which developed a clear, pineappled taste. Much thanks to Steenberg for sending over the tasting kit – I could definitely do more of these!

The Run Diary: Amanda’s Playlist

23 Mar 2010, Posted by Cape Town Girl in cape town, lifestyle, music, the run diaries, 1 Comments

This week’s playlist is actually a general exercise playlist, submitted by Amanda, who does’t run but she walks at an incline and she steps – 2 disciplines not to be scoffed at. I personally have not conquered the Step Machine yet, so ja – respect. I follow Amanda on twitter and you should too because she is smart, funny and very informed, sometimes all at the same time. You should also check out her blog here.

Amanda writes:

“Okay, so I don’t technically “run”. I wish I could, but my knees are knocked from my former career as a child tennis star (s’true). So I walk. Fast. And up a very steep incline (gradient 7.5 on the treadmill). I can also go for miles on the step machine. I love the stepper and in my heyday could go an hour non-stop. Now i spend 20 minutes on the stepper and 20 minutes on the treadmill with some weights thrown in for good measure. I also love that most men suck at the stepper and give up after 10 minutes, staring in wonderment at us girls. Ha.

I’m more of a “great outdoors” exercise person and would rather be surfing or hiking. Between Kaapstad’s south-easter, the miserable winters and my part-time job as a phone-sex worker, this isn’t always possible. So I’m not a gym bunny (more of a gym Labrador), which means I can’t survive it without my iPod. Afro-pop, cheese, drum ‘n bass and a touch of hip-hop keeps me going.” – Amanda

Amanda’s Playlist:

Hole in the Head – Sugarbabes
Try – Gazelle
Sugar – Armand Van Helden
Calabria 2007 – Enur feat. Natasha
Fort Knox – Goldfish
Hip Hop – Dead Prez
Outta Town – Mix ‘n Blend
Right Here, Right Now – Fatboy Slim
Memories – David Guetta & Kid Cudi
Boom Boom Pow – Black Eyed Peas
Starstruck – 3oh!3
Bad Behaviour – Dizzee Rascal
Heavy Cross – Gossip
Not My Name – The Ting Tings
Cobrastyle – Robyn
If I Could Fall In Love – Lenny Kravitz

———————–

Thank you Amanda! Guys – I am loving getting your running / exercise playlists – it has actually changed my running life. I used to struggle to find good music, now, we are positively blessed with an abundance of great running tracks. Please feel free to share your music with us! Send your playlist along with an ‘exercise bio’ and 2 pics to editor@capetowngirl.com xx

Quote of the Weekend

23 Mar 2010, Posted by Cape Town Girl in blogs, cape town, lifestyle, 0 Comments

“Where has it all gone wrong with you girls? Please don’t forget your humble Capetonian roots, and that one day, you were able have fun without worrying If you’re pretty enough, if your friends are good enough for you, and if you’re saying the right thing, doing the right thing, dancing the right way, drinking the right drink, blah blah. It might make you think you’re happy, but it just makes you fucking boring. I know you’re interested. I’ve seen you looking at me, staring at me, at my friends. It’s just a pity I’m not rich and well known enough, right?” – extract from an article about The Vibe Party on The Boytjie Blog

A Saturday in Hout Bay

Imagine the warmth of the autumn sun and a crisp breeze coming off the sea… the sound of dogs barking and children laughing… the gentle push and pull of the waves… breathe in the smell of the sea… it’s Saturday afternoon and you have nowhere else to be…

Inner city travesty.

16 Mar 2010, Posted by Cape Town Girl in Coffee Club, cape town, lifestyle, restaurants, 3 Comments

Lazari.

Been experiencing a major problem lately. Am not sure whether you are familiar with the fine brunch dining establishment that is Lazari. Those native to Cape Town will know it… it’s hidden in the inner city on the upper Westside (yes there’s one in the new Cape Quarter 2 bla bla but that is not REAL Lazari), and it’s an extremely popular morning coffee / brunch / lunch / afternoon tea venue, partly due to its eggs Benedict and partly due to its pink cupcakes. But lately, whenever I arrive at Lazari, both the Benedict AND the cupcakes are sold out, and a conversation of this kind usually follows:

Me: Mmmm I’ll have the eggs Benedict.
Waiter: Sorry, sold out. It’s on the board.
Me: But it was sold out last week when I came too.
Waiter: You must get here early, it’s very popular.
Me: Earlier than 12 on a Sunday? Have you lost your mind?
Waiter: I know, it’s hectic. Sorry.
Me: Okay can I have one of your pink cupcakes then?
Waiter: Uh, also sold out. Sorry. It’s not your day.
Me: They were sold out last week too!
Waiter: We do recommend that you phone ahead and book a cupcake.

And there you have it friends. We live in a city where you gotta call ahead and book your cupcake.

Me: But I don’t use the phone.
Waiter: You’re using your phone now?
Me: Yes but I don’t phone. I don’t use it to phone.
Waiter: Well you could always come in earlier.
Me: Earlier than 12 on a Sunday? Have you lost your mind?

And so forth. All this has taken a terrible toll on my mental health as have had to go elsewhere for cupcakes. By elsewhere I mean ‘beyond Gardens Centre and surrounds’, which means I usually end up driving in circles around Lazari and then driving home. So have been in state of panic. If you see mad-looking girl in underwear driving around looking like great white that’s been interrupted mid-frenzy, give her wide berth. Maybe toss biscuit in the window.

Steenberg Flagship Twitter Tastings – you’re invited!

16 Mar 2010, Posted by Cape Town Girl in cape town, lifestyle, wine, 1 Comments

Oooh, what's inside?

Ah Steenberg. The name is like a second surname to me, really. In addition to being  legendary Capetonian winemakers, the name also conjures forth years’ worth of fond memories of Christmas Days spent with the family on the golf course… getting reprimanded for not having my shirt tucked in, being attacked by a swarm of Egyptian Geese while wandering amidst the Vineyards, being excommunicated from further Christmas lunches for suggesting Ainsley Harriot might not be ‘god’ after all… such good times. All these warm emotions came bubbling to a fore this morning when I received my Flagship Tasting Goodie box filled with 4 different Steenberg wines, namely a Sauvignon Blanc Reserve, a 2009 Semillon (both ideally being drunk in 2 years time but let’s face it, they’ll probably go sooner), a Catharina for cheese platter pairing and a Nebbiolo, to be paired with a charcuterie platter. In it are also included the recipes for Vine Roasted Tomatoes and Goats Cheese, to be drunk with the Sauvignon Blanc, as well as the recipe for Gambas Pil Pil, to be enjoyed with the Semillon. My heart my explodes with joy. Can you hear it beating?

It beats for joy!

Why am I telling you all this? Not just to brag (partially to brag) but mostly to let you know that I, along with this Goodie Box of Steenberg’s finest, will be taking part in a Steenberg Flagship Twitter Tasting at 6pm next Tuesday 23 March. That’s precisely one week from now, so diarise it and tune in here on the twittersphere to watch the action unfold first hand. I will be inviting some of my wine-obsessed friends over, and we’ll have a swell time (I actually plan on cooking those recipes – a treat for all involved, best you hope to receive an invitation). Click here to read more about the Twitter Tastings, and if you click here you’ll see how you can host your own tasting. Fabulous!
