Why smiles are awesome

08 Mar 2011, Posted by Cape Town Girl in BFFs, CTG, LA, beauty, beauty products, videoblogs, videos, 7 Comments

It’s been a while since we sat down and had a nice (video) chat, but on Sunday LA & CTG sat down to talk about smiles, and why they are infinitely preferable to pouts. We got onto the topic because LA has just had her teeth whitened with WhiteSmile Clinic, and I wanted to know about her experience since I have considered having it down many times but have never actually taken the plunge. We also cover topics such as LA going brunette, and whether or not the pout was ‘invented in Tiger Tiger’. Enjoy.

DKNY relaunches their classic fragrance

07 Mar 2011, Posted by Cape Town Girl in Parties, beauty products, cape town, cosmetics, fashion, 0 Comments

Went to the relaunch of DKNY’s classic fragrance last week. I’m a big fan of DKNY. Everything about the brand just screams New York Chic, and the venue of the relaunch did too. The scent is one of the old classics, and it’s great that they’re doing a relaunch because I think some may have forgotten about it. But if you know your fragrances, DKNY for men and women is right up there with D&G Light Blue as a clean and timeless scent.

For those of you who didn’t know, the models in the image are a real life couple, and the last models were also a couple in real life. I love that there’s a story behind this picture.

More of the fabulous launch venue – a penthouse in the inner city.

Stark lines and shadows and sparkles

Oysters, champagne and a fresh, inspiring fragrance - what a lovely way to spend an evening. We were treated to a brief history of the brand, as well as DKNY Be Delicious, the summer version of the DKNY fragrances and DKNY Pure. If you’re a fresh fragrance fan, the DKNY scent range is sure to appeal to you. To celebrate the relaunch, DKNY are holding a competition with News Cafe -  Click here to find out more. You could win some awesome DKNY stuff, as well as tickets to some great parties. Click here to like the DKNY South Africa page to keep up to date with DKNY happenings. Also listen out for the DKNY competition on 5fm. DKNY mania ladies!

launch of Shinso at ReyJeane Salon & Spa

Rey & PD at the Shinso launch

Reyjeane & PD

PD & I attended the launch of the Shinso Skincare range at CTG’s much-loved ReyJeane Spa & Salon. Shinso is a Japanese product that’s been heralded as a ‘facelift in a bottle’, and all of Cape Town’s prettiest ladies were out in force. Shinso creator, Nao Tsuruta, flew out from Japan especially for the occasion and was giving trials of the Shinso Mist. It’s made using not one but two ingredients that got their creators Nobel Prizes when they were discovered (read more here).

Once we’d eaten our fill of oysters and champagne, we got half our faces sprayed with the mist so we could see for ourselves the effect. It definitely made our skin feel tighter, as if it had been a little pulled back. And super soft too. You can buy the products from ReyJeane Salon. Check out some Before & Afters here.

Eyelash extensions at dealio.co.za

www.dealio.co.za

Morning everyone. Have you gotten into the group buying phenomenon yet? No? It’s where you pay a hugely discounted price for a product or service because a whole bunch of people are buying it. So it’s like buying in bulk, individually, and it brings down the price of some HDI’s drastically (HDI = Highly Desirable Items). I see dealio is featuring one of CTG’s favourite things of all time – Eyelash Extensions! And they’re going for the insane price of R330. I usually pay R690 for mine, so that’s quite a saving. To buy the Dealio eyelash extension deal click here.

Not quite sure how it works? That’s fine - read a step-by-step breakdown of it here. This is the future of shopping.

makeup review: Clinique Chubby Sticks

16 Feb 2011, Posted by Cape Town Girl in CTG recommends, beauty products, 0 Comments

Loving Clinique's Chubby Sticks right now. Tinted lip balm FTW

Got a preview of Clinique’s new winter goodies and so far am loving the Chubby Sticks. They’re like lipsticks that met lip balm at Milky Lane at Cavendish Square and shared a waffle and then became BFFs. Super smooth and glidey, and layerable, probably because they’re made with Shea and Mango Seed butters. And Chubby. They’re a joy to use. And they’ll be at Clinique counters from April 2011, selling for about R175.

My favourite colours: Super Strawberry for the day, and Chunky Cherry for night.

Maybelline brings New York to Cape Town

21 Jan 2011, Posted by Cape Town Girl in Parties, beauty products, cape town, fashion, 3 Comments

Attended the extremely glam launch of Maybelline Lash Stiletto in the middle of town last night. It’s got a cute design – like a Stiletto heel.

The party was inside the extremely glamourous Old Mutual building in Darling Street. So NYC darlings! I had an eye out for Patrick Bateman, but I didn’t see him. I guess that’s the thing about successful serial killers. They’re not apparent. Back to the party…

Everyone milling around drinking apple martinis and cosmopolitans.

Fabulous venue - very NYC

So glam. So fabulous. We love us a good fashion party and this one got the year’s social calendar off to a seriously stilettoed start. Now say that three times fast.

Spa Saturday at Reyjeane: Lindt pedicures, head massages and Essie micro-dermabrasion manicures

with Rey - salon owner :)

Proudly displaying french manicure with salon owner Rey

I tried out Reyjeane Spa & Salon in the Hudson round the corner from Cape Quarter on Saturday. I went for three treatments:

1. A Lindt Deluxe Chocolate Pedicure

2. An Essie Anti-Ageing and E-Juvenate Manicure

3. The Kerastase Aqua Oleum Moisture Treatment

The prices of which can all be found here. Very reasonable. Anyway Reyjeane, if you haven’t been, is a spa and salon that reminds me of a princess’s dressing rooms. The decor is beautiful and pretty and opulent – think armoires and chaise longues. I think it’s a great place to book, say, four of your friends in and go get your hair and nails done before a special event or a big night out, because you can all chat to each other and enjoy the champagne and Lindt choccies and the cupcakes and the cappuccinos that you are served while you get pampered.

chilled salon vibes

Reyjeane - serene and chilled

Lindt chocolate pedicure - extreme indulgence

Lindt Chocolate foot masque - unreal how delicious it smells. This was preceded by a foot massage. Lots of happiness going on here.

macarons while you mani!

Macarons while you have your hair done?

Or perhaps some chocolate?

cupcake goodness

No? Fancy a cupcake then?

Now I went into Reyjeane with a knot the size of a child’s first in my hair. This happens sometimes - between the blur of charity balls and social soirees and hairspray and teasing sessions that is my life – I sometimes forget to ‘brush it out’ and then it gets worse and worse and eventually I actually cannot brush it out on my own. Enter the lovely ladies at Reyjeane, who used something called a ‘Tangle Teezer’ to get it out. What is a ‘Tangle Teezer’, you ask? It is a gift from god. Please. Try it and see.

Chilled salon times

After the knot was gone my hair was soaked in the Kerastase Aqua Oleum to help revive it to something resembling healthy hair. This treatment came with a head massage, and while it soaked in my hair I got a shoulder and neck massage, too. I struggle to communicate the awesomeness of this series of treatments. Head massage. Neck massage. Soft, silky hair. You do the beauty maths. It adds up to 7 000%.

The Essie Anti-Ageing E-Juvenate treatment is unlike any mani I have ever had before. It uses micro-dermabrasion (just process that for a second) to renew the skin on your hands, and then smother your hands in a vanilla-delicious Essie intensive recovery cream. It’s crazy – you can see the difference between the skin on your hands and your arm immediately. I was like, ‘can we do that on the rest of my body?’

I opted for a classic French Manicure on my hands, and blood red on my toes. I’ve never actually had a French Manicure. I always ‘go hardcore’ and get short red or closest-shade-to-black-that-is-not-black nails. Felt very grown up.

went classic french

Frenchie.

Can I show you a picture of champagne and chocolate again? Yes? Great!!!

Lindt & champagne while I'm getting a pedicure - that's how they do it here at Reyjeane

Basil – Reyjeane’s hair stylist – blowdried my hair into softly curled perfection. I flounced around the rest of the day annoying my friends with questions like, ‘don’t you just LOVE these soft curls? I clean up well, right? How pretty am I? Don’t you think Prince William should have proposed to ME?” etc.

I literally left a new woman. New hair. New feet, new neck, new hands. Reyjeane can be found at the Hudson building (same building as Origin Coffee and The Loading Bay – you MUST try their sandwiches if you haven’t yet) in Hudson Street in the Cape Quarter. Click here to see their prices - they really do have great pricing girls – seriously. And the ladies who work there are not only great at what they do but also very very sweet and kind and lovely.

To make a booking call 021 418 0391. Tell ‘em you want the Lindt Chocolate Pedi. You won’t look back, I promise!

Coffee & Shades post KWV dinner

D&G Cats’ Eyes from Sunglass Hut: Check.Wear them indoors all day and annoy everyone around you for being ‘one of those people’. I don’t care. I’m in too much pain.

Double Skinny Latte from Vida: Check. Take small sips continuously over course of the morning. Annoy everyone around you with your slurping sounds. Doesn’t matter because everyone’s already annoyed at you for wearing shades at your desk.

Spray La Mer’s Mist all over face in bid to ‘feel fresh’.

Smother skin in Elizabeth Arden’s Prevage Serum to smooth out pillow lines on face (due to combination of extreme dehydration and falling face down into bed).

Clinique Supermoisture Foundation: Check. Hide that tell-tale red face.

Pop 4 x Natrodale Milk Thistle in the hopes that doubling the dose will make up for not taking it the night before, like I should have.

Fake smile: Check. Hoping it ‘turns real’ any second now…

Thanks KWV ;)

CTGs LA & SB attend the launch of the new Estee Lauder / Bobbi Brown / Clinique / La Mer counters

08 Nov 2010, Posted by Cape Town Girl in BFFs, CTG recommends, LA, beauty products, bloggers, cape town, cosmetics, fashion, girl stuff, lifestyle, shopping, south africa, 0 Comments

LA & SB hit up the Table Bay hotel for a super glam VIP breakfast to celebrate the opening of the new Estee Lauder, Clinique, La Mer and Bobbi Brown beauty counters at Edgars V&A Waterfront last week. The food was delicious and it was a great networking event – everyone in beauty and beauty blogging was there.

The girls got their makeup done, they got to sample gorgeously indulgent La Mer products and enjoy the brand new beauty counters, all before anyone else.

And they walked away with some fabulous goodie bags filled with Bobbi Brown, Clinique, Estee Lauder and La Mer products. It was extremely naughty of Estee Lauder to spoil the ladies like this! :) But nobody’s complaining.

Get down to the new counters at Waterfront Edgarsthey really are stunning! The lighting is so close to daylight you’ll get a good idea of how your makeup will actually look on your skin. They are also very spacious and well-organised. They get a manicured thumbs up from LA & SB.

eyelash extensions done by Mooi

01 Nov 2010, Posted by Cape Town Girl in BFFs, CTG recommends, beauty products, cape town, cosmetics, fashion, girl stuff, lifestyle, 2 Comments

So PD’s been nagging me to get some eyelash extensions for ages now. She comes back from her shopping trips to Dubai with fancy ideas in her head, which she then forces on us. While awkward at first, this almost always works out in our best interests (cases in point being laser hair removal, beeswax extensions for hair, bronzers of all kinds and Shiseido eye pens – ‘always go Jap for eye products’ -PD). I had these done at Mooi - it costs R690 for the full set, and then you go back for fillers every 6 weeks or so for R390 a session. Make sure you have time – it takes 2 hours to have a full set put in, but it’s very relaxing and not at all sore.

You can choose from 3 kinds  of lash - acrylic, silk or mink. I went for acrylic as mink and silk are VERY soft – wait til you’re an extension pro before you go there. These acrylics are very easy wearing though – you just live your life as normal (showering, swimming, etc) and try not to rub your eyes. So far I’m loving not having to wear any eye makeup. Think I could get used to that. Plus they feel kinda nice. Like if you blink enough, you might just take off. And fly away. Far, far away.
