They sent to to say thank you for taking part in the tasting – and now I must thank them for saying thank you. If you haven’t tasted any of these wines, you are sorely missing out. Best you book a tasting for you and your friends by calling this number +27 21 713-2211. You can also get hold of them on their website here.

Parked outside my place yesterday. Pretty, yes?

Would love a little beastie like this for Sunday drives. Please don’t tell me ‘how much petrol it guzzles’ or ‘how expensive the parts are’. Is not the point! Is beautiful!

Always wanted to see a sanitary pad stuck to the bottom of the basin when I use the ladies room at the movies! (Ster Kinekor)

Why do you think they did this? Is one supposed to touch it? I doubt it would be dry since it’s constantly being ‘topped up’. In which case, is there something to be learned about the product by prodding a soggy sanitary pad? Plus that hole in the middle just takes things to, well, a whole new level. Hmm… what I would call ‘tactless tactical’.

Eat here: Deli Delish in Hout Bay

30 Mar 2010, Posted by Cape Town Girl in cape town, lifestyle, restaurants, 1 Comments

Am not one for leaving the city bowl. Quite frankly, the thought of it frightens me. All that space in the suburbs is appalling. And beyond… all those ‘highways’ and ‘open plots of land on the side of the road’ - what’s with that? Nothing like the 5 000-apartment pile-up that is the city bowl. You can understand why a city girl would quiver when she was invited by her ‘Hout Bay Friend’ to have lunch with him… in Hout Bay.

As if leaving The Bowl wasn’t bad enough, Hout Bay is like a whole new level, because when you’re there you don’t feel like you’re in Cape Town. You feel like you’re on holiday. And for someone who a) never leaves Cape Town and b) never goes on holiday, this is massive. Even more massive is the fact that I actually made it there. In the flesh. And it wasn’t even that bad!

We ate lunch at Deli Delish, and it was very delish. I had the butternut, ricotta and chickpea salad – I give it 7 out of 10. The DD is a very cosy place with ecclectic decor – the bathroom is done up like an old library, complete with taxidermied springbok with a jaunty hat.

And the outside area is both sheltered and sunny – perfect place for chilling with a book for the afternoon. The only gripe I had was the strange lady who allowed her dog to eat, sleep and walk all over the table. Am confused. Is this a Hout Bay thing? Do dogs have the same rights as people in Hout Bay? Can someone enlighten me? Or are poodle puppies the new oysters – ‘to be eaten alive, while fresh?’

Mmm... Puppy Salad!

The Run Diary: Ryan’s Playlist

Meet Ryan, who is a running fanatic and also writes a rather amusing blog called The Boytjie Blog – you should check it out. You can also follow Ryan and his antics on twitter. Now Ryan has an ‘ultimate running playlist’ on his site which is something like 7 000 days 20 hrs long (not kidding), so he has very kindly summarised it here. Ryan also has a story:

“A few years back, I had a hectic operation which stopped me from exercising for a whole year, and from running for two years. Not that I really ever loved running. It’s bloody difficult, and hurts like hell.

That’s exactly the same reason I started again three years back. What’s the point of doing something if its easy? I love it because it’s difficult. Running is every muscle in your body telling you NO. And I love it because it hurts like hell.

I’m not going to gargle on about how slow and far I used to run, how fast and far I run now. How chubby I was. What marathon is next. That’s not what matters. What matters to me is the feeling, the freedom.

Nothing makes me feel more alive. (Well, cough, almost nothing..)
The music just makes it even better.
” – Ryan

It’s Macaroon Mania!

And these ones are seriously contenders for the ‘Ultimate Macaroon’ title. I present One&Only Macaroons from One&Only Hotel Cape Town, which appeared upon my desk this morning as if by magic! That, my friends, is why One&Only is called a 6-star hotel – you get room service when you’re not even in your room!

What a fantastic way to start a Tuesday

If I were to describe these Macaroons, I’d say that their candy-brittle shells crumble into creamy, sweet vanilla-chocolate-jammy centres… close your eyes and imagine it. Taste the magic of the macaroons. Happy Tuesday! PS. Still not familiar with Macaroons (where have you been)? Click here to read up.

Rihanna’s Rudeboy: a good old-fashioned romance

29 Mar 2010, Posted by Cape Town Girl in Celebrity, music, 0 Comments

Guys, would like to take a moment to consider Rihanna’s latest single, ‘Rudeboy’, which I have had in my head for past 3 weeks straight. Now this song has received a lot of flack for ‘being shallow’, but I personally perceive it to be a very important contemporary commentary on relationships. Let us dissect the lyrics:

In the opening verse Rihanna grapples with issues every woman faces in her lifetime, namely, will her boyfriend / husband / one-night-stand be able to ‘get it up’. Assume she is talking about a tent, and that she and her loved one are camping. Being able to ‘get up a tent’ is key sign that man is ‘a keeper’. This v NB question is followed by ‘is you big enough’, referring one presumes to her potential man’s emotional maturity. As in, ‘is he enough of a big boy to handle an emotionally  and mentally complex woman such as myself’.

She then goes onto instruct her potential mate to ‘take it, love me’, which I take to be a symbolic offering of her spirit to him, as if he has made the grade in ‘being able to get up a tent’ and has proved himself to be ‘emotionally big enough’.

In the next verse, Rihanna explores ‘taking things to the next level‘. Potential man has proved himself, and now she is ‘letting him express his emotional needs’ by letting him ‘be the captain’ and ‘do his thing’. She uses the idea of the now, of living in the present, by using the words ‘tonight’, and further goes on to task him with opening up emotionally by instructing him to ‘giddyup giddyup giddy up babe’.

Now that Rihanna and her man have laid the ground rules for their commitment to one another, ‘I wa-wa-want what you wa-wa-want’ she can ask him if he is happy with their life together with, and expresses that ‘making him happy makes her happy’. She expresses that she would enjoy it if they continued their very measured courtship with ‘give it to me baby like boom boom boom’.

Onto my favourite verse. By ‘touch me there’ Rihanna is talking about how the love of her ‘rudeboy’ reaches deep into her soul and ‘touches her there’. In ‘I like the way you pull my hair’ she is clearly referring to how he gently plays with her hair when they are waking up together. She then goes onto express how if she weren’t in love, she would not pretend to be, with ‘if I don’t feel it I ain’t faking no no’.

From Rihanna’s album artwork, it is clear that Riri has ‘big things on her mind’, that cause her to put her head in her hand, as if it is ‘all too much’. Wouldn’t you feel the same if you were tackling such poignant issues in such strict monosyllabic pentameter? Please enjoy Rudeboy:
