How to make a Summer Beach Bag courtesy of Elizabeth Galloway Academy of Fashion

2011-11-06 07:21:46 +0000 Attention aspiring fashionistas. I spent Saturday afternoon at the Elizabeth Galloway Academy of Fashion Design (like SA’s version of Central St Martins) where we were taught how to make a summer bag. I had lovely (and very very patient ) miss Mieke helping me because it’s a lot harder than it looks this whole ‘creating fashion from scratch’ thing.

I made most of the rookie errors – going so fast my thread came out the machine, skew stiching that had to be unpicked, messy pinning, reckless overlocking – you name it, I messed it up. But somehow the pile of fabric materialised into a gorgeous summer bag in the end, which I’ll definitely be using on the beach!Elizabeth Galloway Below: the ‘before’ picture – believe it or not this will become a handbag

A whole lot of this before anything becomes real. That navy ribbon is vintage, by the way ;)

Some more finishings and embellishments

And then voila! We have ourselves a gorgeous beach bag. Country WHO???? ;)

If this looks like the sort of thing you’d enjoy doing full time, you should look into doing one of their courses. They do Part Time Short Courses as well as a full Diploma in Fashion Design that takes 3 years. And if you don’t really want to become a designer but would rather work in and around the field of fashion, then this is the place to come – they teach you all about the adjacent industries too (buying, styling, fashion writing, business). A big thanks to Derek and the lovely ladies for all your help and for a lovely afternoon out in Stellenbosch. Click here to go to the Elizabeth Galloway website.

A quick preview of our afternoon at Elizabeth Galloway School of Fashion. We made summer bags. Lots of fun but also a lot harder than it looks! More later :)

Let’s make Cape Town a healthier place

According to the annual Discovery Vitality Healthiest City survey, Johannesburg is once again the healthiest city with the highest levels of physical activity (must be all that shopping!) followed by – in descending order – Pretoria, Durban, Port Elizabeth and, in last place, Cape Town (sad news friends).

Here are some interesting facts for you from the study:

The average BMI in Cape Town is 27,1 (18 – 25 is considered healthy)

The average cholesterol level is 4,8 (that’s fine, you’ll be put on a cholesterol-lowering diet at about 5.5 and medicated if you’re around 6.5+)

Most people eat just under three portions of fruit and veggies a day (we can do better!)

23% of people smoke (naughty! But a lot less than I expected to be honest)

Only 36% of Cape Town’s residents fall within the healthy Body Mass Index (BMI) range of between 18.5 and 25. This is compared to 40% in Johannesburg, 37% in Durban, 34% in Pretoria and 33% in Port Elizabeth. Hey, we have amazing restaurants!

And only 20% of Capetonians participate in at least 150 minutes per week of moderate intensity physical activity, which is the recommended minimum for health benefits. 42% do less than 75 minutes per week. In addition, 86% of the city’s residents eat less than the recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables per day. What are we eating?! Man can not live on complimentary Vida e Caffe Lindt chocolates alone!

If this is you, maybe it’s time to make some changes hmmm? They don’t have to be huge! If you’re one of those people who says ‘it’s in my genes, there’s nothing I can do’, please read this article by TIME about how that’s absolute bollocks.

Start small. Why not join us in doing the Discovery Cape Times BIG WALK next weekend? It’s only 5kms. And it’s a walk. And you know what? Even if you’re the most unfit person you know, it will a) make you a happier person (because that’s what exercise does) and b) will do wonders for your body and state of mind. As someone who started running late in life, I sometimes get angry that NO-ONE TOLD ME HOW AMAZING IT MAKES YOU FEEL SOONER. So this is me, telling you.

Nando’s drops it like it’s *not* hot

So CTG’s header got a fruit / veggy makeover in honour of Nando’s launching their new Tangy Tomato flavour. I love it!

Think sun-ripened delicious tomatoes with a touch of aromatic basil and a splash of balsamic vinegar. Makes my brain mouth water to think about it. Tangy Tomato (click to discover more on their facebook page) is for the chicken lovers who don’t necessarily love the Peri Peri experience. So now you can choose from Tangy Tomato, Lemon & Herb, Mild, Medium and Extra Hot. Nom Nom! As someone old and wise once said:

“If you can’t take the heat, get into the Nando’s kitchen.”

Here’s a deliciously evil little ad that talks about some research Nando’s did on whether people like the new Tangy Tomato flavour:

And then have you ever heard of that tomato festival in spain which is pretty much mud wrestling but instead of mud they use ripe tomatoes? Best you watch this then:

I can’t WAIT to try the new Tangy Tomato Nando’s flavour. Nom Nom!

Versace clutch

Gorgeous little clutch you get as your shades case when you buy a pair of Versace Shields at Sunglass Hut. Like! The Shields (AMAZING for running with, btw – snug on the face, no slipping down your nose or letting glare in from the top):
