OMG: Tamara Mellon resigns from Jimmy Choo

17 Nov 2011, Posted by Cape Town Girl in Celebrity, book club, fashion, shoes, 0 Comments

Att girl moguls: the top spot at Jimmy Choo is open! The socialite who messed over an immigrant for his talent and name and then bought him out and ruthlessly became head of one of the biggest luxury shoe brands in the world has stepped down, after JC was sold to a big luxury brands group earlier this year. Not surprising. Time to spend a bit of time ‘reflecting on her success’ on a desert island, I’m sure. Have you read the Jimmy Choo Story? It’s a fascinating book for any of you looking to get into the fashion industry. Basically, if you want to succeed you need to find someone talented and clueless (like Jimmy Choo) that you can ride off, and then you need to find someone beautiful and famous (like Princess Diana) who’s unofficial endorsement you can exploit and BAM! You’re it!

As someone famous once said:

“All’s fair in love and fashion as long as you have a nice logo and hot ppl modelling ur shizz.”

source: guardian

That said, I am TERRIBLY OKAY with the following zebra-print pieces from the JC Cruise Collection 2012. TERRIBLY OKAY.

Camps Bay Vida takes home the cup

So Vida Camps Bay were the victors the 5-aside finals that took place on Sunday. It was super exciting – made even more so by the fact that Santos star Ryan Harris joined to give the guys training tips and let them test their skills against him (pictured below)

Here are some snaps from the day

And Camps Bay emerged victorious. Was so much fun, although I was personally rooting for Wembley (my Vida ‘home base’). Well done Majimbos! X

A Sunday in small steps: The Discovery Big Walk

14 Nov 2011, Posted by Cape Town Girl in CTG recommends, cape town, exercise, gym jabber, lifestyle, south africa, the run diaries, things to do, 0 Comments

Had so much fun doing the Big Walk on Sunday, that was sponsored by Discovery Health. We did the 5kms and it was so lovely to go on foot through parts of Cape Town I never normally see. When we started at about 10h30 the rain started coming down in big fat drops as we began walking, but walking in the rain is not nearly as bad as you think it is. Some people had plastic bags over their outfits (the theme was superheroes – check out our cool capes) and others whined about it, but really now – most of us spend our lives in airconditioned offices getting flourescent light tans – a little rain while you walk is wonderful for reminding us that we live on earth and not in Planet Cubicle.

The 5kms went from Newlands through Mowbray and ended up at St George’s Mall. And everyone in Cape Town was there! It was a serious family affair – moms and dads and kids and aunts and uncles and babies (in prams!). There was such a great vibe of general good will and joviality. If you want to take part in something that’s both fun and really healthy, make sure you sign up for the @Discovery_SA Big Walk next year.

Truly loving the fact that I got 4000 Discovery points for doing the Big Walk (each time you go to gym you get 150 – and the points system is amazing, it gives you real (real real real) rewards back. If you’re not making Vitality work for you chat to someone there about how you can – it’s so worth it when you look at the discounts you can get on all sorts of things. And a HUGE side effect of earning points is, of course, good health. What are you waiting for?

A huge thank you to Discovery for organising such a great way to contribute to personal fitness. As someone who runs just about every day, it was so great to take part in a big event like this with a brand that does SO much for keeping people healthy. And although Cape Town might have come fifth in the Discovery Healthiest City Study, I think we made up for it in the spirit stakes! :) Not sure what the turnout was but it looked like a million people were there, all doing their bit to get healthy and all having a great time. See you next year – going to do the 10km walk next time!

Paradise

Hint: there isn’t normally water at the base of it, but with Global warming a few heartbeats away it this could be some kind of non-utopian Capetonian future…

Discovery Health Walking Clinic

Had a great day chatting health benefits with Craig from Discovery Health (top right) and some other media folk as a warm-up to our Big Walk on Sunday. We talked about what makes being healthy hard, and it’s not just the mere existence of McDonald’s (or in my case, macarons). It’s also misleading food packaging, about how we don’t know what acceptable levels of salt, sugar and fat is. We also talked about how it can be hard for some people to stay motivated when it comes to exercise. That’s one thing Discovery are great at – I am personally obsessed with earning Vitality points and will take any opportunity to do so. Blood tests, going to gym and, of course, the Big Walk which I’m doing on Sunday with Discovery (4 000 Vitality points! Wheeeeeeee!).

See you at the Big Walk on Sunday! (I’ll be the girl in the Discovery cap and the Bulgari Shades from Sunglass Hut ;)

Awesome new lunch spot

Put it on your list of awesome lunch spots. It’s at 190 Sir Lowry Road in Woodstock and has British flag awnings so it’s easy to spot (on the right coming out of town). I had the Asian Tuna wrap with a selection of their fantastic salads. And their crunchies are good too. Click.
